Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

“Winter Wonderland”

What a great trip - would love to have seen the snow lower down but what a great day. Weather was fine but chilly and scenery everything we imagined. Food on board was varied and priced reasonably.

“Fabulous experience”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We were lucky enough to leave Christchurch on a beautiful (freezing) day, and the scenery was gorgeous with fresh snow all around once we headed towards the ranges. The train was short - only three carriages plus the luggage carriage, so it was easy to find our seats. We were a party of four so had been allocated seats facing each other with a table between us. The seats were very comfortable and the windows are huge and very clean, so we could all see the fabulous scenery. They supply headphones so you can enjoy a commentary about where the train is going, and the history of the area. We travelled to Cass and got off the train there to stay at Grasmere Lodge (a slice of heaven) for a night. We picked up the train again the next day. When the train stopped to pick us up, the train staff were waiting for us at the door of the carriage, and showed us to our seats. The train only stops for 3 minutes so they are very well organised. The staff in general are very good, with typical South Island friendliness. There is an outside viewing carriage (but with temperatures of zero only the very hardy were tempted) and the view from our window was excellent so we were happy to stay put. There is also a cafe carriage where you can purchase food and drinks to take back to your seat.
When we reached Arthurs Pass it was snowing, which was quite a treat for us sitting in the warm and cosy train. All in all it was a fabulous experience, and I would recommend it to anyone - especially in the winter when the scenery is quite spectacular.

“Absolute must do . . .”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

This was the last activity of my 3 week trip around NZ. I was very excited to have a leisurely train trip up through and over the Southern Alps.

The train is maintained in exceptionally clean and tidy condition. The buffet car has a great spread of foods and the staff are extremely friendly and open to help you with any request.

The commentary from both the location-based video as well as the train manager make for an extremely educational and enjoyable travel.

The train stops over in Greymouth for ~60mins for a complete clean and service before returning to CHC, so, that's just enough time to venture south from the train station to the brewery to sample their products - an equally "don't miss it" activity.

“Not that exciting”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

After reading plenty of positive reviews on this train trip I was looking forward to it, The train was clean and comfortable, staff were nice, quite efficient, some of the views early on were quite good but in general most of the trip was fairly boring. If I hadn't been on a few train trips through Europe it might have seemed ok but in comparison to some of those it was not that great.
