“Full of surprises....”
Reviewed 13 December 2012

I stayed in the Triple Deluxe with ensuite for two nights, and had it in my head before arriving, that because It was the YMCA it would be grotty.....
How wrong I was....
My suite was immaculate, you could even smell how clean the ensuite was before walking in there.
The bed I so wanted to take home, so comfy...Very warm room with a great view of the City gardens across the road...
Very close to the city center, never had a problem with the receptionists, with being new to Christchurch, one of the ladies actually took me outside to direct me of the nearest mall and gave me the info I was after about a few places.....

The only disappointment I had was the attached cafe not open late....Arrived around 8.30pm and wasnt prepared to walk the streets in the dark looking for a place to have dinner, even just a wee kiosk at the YMCA open 24 hours would be a great idea seeing as they have travellers that arrive at all hours of the day and night.....

Other than that, I will be staying there again next time Im in ChCh.

Only stopped off in Christchurch for one night. Not loads of choices of hostels for obvious reasons, it seems a shame that YMCA seems to be taking advantage of the lack of competition as the place was truly awful. Receptionists were rude, and didn’t really help out when we wanted advice, the bathroom/showers were constantly dirty with soap dispensers not filled. The communal kitchen was tiny, and could maybe fit 3 at a time (must have been a 250+ capacity) and was surrounded by loud lager louts, hanging around watching tv in the communal area near the kitchen, with lager cans everywhere. Actual bedroom was ok, but just a rubbish place to stay

Final Review: May be the case where you have no choice but to stay here, but not a nice place, 1 star

We stayed for the last night of our honeymoon in Christchurch at the YMCA!! Following the earthquake we found that most of the area in Central CHCH is still closed off so there are not many hotels to choose from if you don't have a car.

Saying that we had a very pleasant stay, the room was clean and the facilities were good. Despite having a shared bathroom I had a vision of fighting for the shower in the morning but even this was fine.

The location is very good, right next to the botanical gardens and Canterbury museum and just a short walk to the rest of town.

Obviously being a hostel it is a bit noisy and full of excited travellers but nothing to put us off staying here.

This hostel was our second one in Chch and we might have had too high standards since the other one was amazing, but this hostel has all the bad things you don't want from your stay. However, we had a double room which was spatial and clean with a nice bed and close to the toilet, which made our stay pleasant enough.

Good stuff: the location is awesome - right beside the beautiful botanic garden and real close to where the buses stop. Also, the room was nice and they provided towels. The hostel offered a lot of physical activities which can otherwise be hard to find while on vacation.

Bad stuff: Our major concern was the kitchen which was actually smaller than our room and meant to be shared by the whole hostel, and naturally it was disgusting and smelled like pee. Somebody actually opened our food bag and took an apple. Furthermore there was only one elevator used by everyone and it took forever if you needed it.
The Internet was unacceptably expensive too use.
The common areas was really old and dirty too, probably cleaned daily but too old to ever be clean again.

All in all, our stay wasn't horrible but insted rather nice. This was however due to our room and I wouldn't recommend the dorms. If you need a bed in CBD, this is your hostel. But if you want cheap and being able to cook and meet new people, I'd say keep looking.

The YMCA has a very convenient location between the downtown (currently mostly red area closed to the private traffic) and the beautiful Hagley park and Botanical garden.
As expected it is usually very busy with an offer of different level of rooms. I had a room with bathroom at the 5th level with a beautiful view.
The prices are a little higher than expected for a YMCA.

The reception women are useless ,hopeless ,unhelpful and unfriendly !!! What a great location ,but they really need to improve on their customer service skills ,because I am NOT going to stay there anymore !!! It was the worst customer service I have never and ever been expericed .simply ask the direction how 2 get to YMCA ,the answer is " I don't know and I am not too sure " but how the heck you get to work everyday?! During the earthquake, there are some roads blocked and a few one way systems, it is really hard 4 a outside to drive around :(( the only thing that I like is location very convenience

Stayed here for two nights in an apartment on the top floor. Plenty of room for 4, with two bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and ample living space.

About a 7 minute stroll to the centre of town (RE:Start) and right next to the park, so very convenient. The staff on reception weren't too helpful with assisting us with places/things to do, but we managed to find some great places to drink and dine.

A great fitness centre is also on the ground floor, and a fantastic coffee shop/cafe with all sorts of goodies. Very convenient.

Would reccomend as a nice place to stay if you need a place in town (and you get the apartment). Can be noisy at night due to the type of people YMCA's attract.

Room Tip: There are only two apartments available, make sure you get in early.
