We stayed at the Chardonnay Motor Lodge from 24th December - 29th December
2010. The hospitality is very good and a we had a very comfortable stay over the Christmas period. We were very impressed with the chocolate santas on our arrival and the home baking. A lovely welcoming feeling and quiet units even though the motor lodge is on a busy road.
Many thanks. Maryanne.

I must start by saying that the Chardonnay Motor Lodge is a very nice place to stay.

The positives are that the surrounding grounds/gardens, BBQ, outdoor tables, badminton net, The Groynes down the road, and the quality of the room/kitchenette are all wonderful! I personally believe it to be worth the money spent, and certainly competitive with the surrounding hotels. Also, it gets a couple bonus points for being very close to the airport, but does suffer from other location issues (see below). Finally, one of the owners Louise (and other housekeeping staff) was very accommodating, friendly, and pleasing to chat with - Cheers!

However, with all the positive features that this hotel displays, there are a few minor negatives that it faces. Some of these issues are easy to rectify, where others may be impossible to change.

First of all, even though the immediate grounds are beautiful, the hotel is located on a very busy highway (Johns Road) and is a long walking distance from any supermarket , restaurant, etc...so without a rental car it is a great nuisance to shop for supplies to use in the nice kitchenette provided. Also, the location of the hotel loses points since it is at least 20 minutes from the city of Christchurch. However, the Metro is a convenient way to get into the city, but again, the bus stops are somewhat a long walk away so a rental car seems to be a must have.

The second issue is the lack of available wireless internet in the rooms. Although they have wireless internet on the grounds of the hotel, the signal is so weak that it only reaches 1 or 2 of the units available for rent!! I literally had to go outside with my laptop onto one of the picnic benches to use the internet, and this turned out to be quite frustrating at times. I think this issue should be easy to fix - stronger wireless signal please!

The third and final issue was with the second owner Terry. He didn't seem all that friendly and always seemed to be in such a rush! Upon our arrival, he picked us up from the airport and didn't say a word to us. He rushed us into our room and even left without giving us our key! Upon delivering us back to the airport for our departure, again he didn't say a word to us the whole trip (not even hello). We are quite friendly people, so I must assume he didn't have a personal issue with us. This was quite disappointing after an overall lovely stay at the Chardonnay.

We are pleased that this young couple generally enjoyed their stay with us as can be seen by the photos on their BLOG!
The three negative points they made about their stay are unfortunate and we would like to respond.

Firstly we make no secret of our semi-rural location and the fact that the city centre is 15 to 20 minutes away. In fact this is the very reason most of our regular guests choose to stay here. We are happy to drop guests to and from the bus-stop (1 km from Motel) if we can but would always suggest that our guests have their own transport especially if they are staying for several days.

Secondly we do have an issue with our wireless signal which we are trying to rectify. Apparently the brick construction and expanse of our buildings are the problem. However there is a wireless signal in half of our units and we have a kiosk in reception. We currently provide internet free of charge. If our guests tell us ahead of their arrival that they require internet in their unit we will certainly endeavour to provide it.

Thirdly and perhaps most surprising, is their description of Terry. He is not unfriendly (of course I’m biased) but I’m sure our regular guests would agree. He is a busy man and can sometimes provide 5 or 6 Free transfers to and from the airport on a busy day. We believe he had 4 people in the van the day this couple left and the lady in the front with Terry rather monopolised the conversation! Terry had a family bereavement the preceding week and he may have been rather pre-occupied with this during this couples stay. Of course every guest expects and deserves friendly, courteous service and that’s certainly what we aim to provide.

Louise.

Comfortable and friendly place to stay - no frills, but ticks all the boxes. Roomy, has everything you need for a motel type stay - including laundry. 2 small quibbles - internet access in the rooms (at the moment only @ reception) would be nice, and the end rooms (#15) have a dull red glow from the neon sign that comes in through the frosted glass front door. Didn't bother us, but might be troublesome for sensitive sleepers. All in all - would stay here again.

Following the Canterbury earthquake, we were unable to stay in our city centre hotel. Luckily I found this motel online and managed to book a room for the night. Upon arrival, we were very impressed with the level of service, given how busy they were.

We were shown to our well-appointed room where all features were explained. Restaurants were recommended and the owner even drove us to the car rental company in the morning!

This motel is EXCELLENT value for money and we would definitely stay here again!

This is a lovely quiet motel to stay at in Christchurch. However the winery venue next door has weddings often on a Saturday, and depending on the Wedding could keep you awake till midnight. The first time we stayed there was no noise from the wedding, the second time we stayed they had a band - and this could be heard - although not too loudly, as there is hush glazing - till midnight. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again on a weeknight though. It wasn't enough to dampen our stay, but something to be aware of if you need to get to bed early, or have to get up early the next morning. The rooms are well appointed, with a small bench top oven/hotplate, and microwave for cooking. Lovely outlook and gardens, and expansive lawn.

Firstly, many thanks to this guest for their review. We are delighted that their stay was pleasant.

Regarding wedding noise from next door, this has been an issue on some occasions in the past. We have endeavoured to work with our neighbour to maintain a reasonable noise level, and can usually arrive at a compromise.

Further - I am happy to report that the business next door has now ceased operations, so we are now noise free as of April 2010.

I hope that we can be of service to you at some time in the future and please bet assured of our best attention at all times.
