The re:START mall is a show of the resilient Christchurch business to recover and start a shopping precinct, and the idea for a quick turn around in shipping containers to keep the city alive is a great and wonderful idea!
We wander around the shops, a little lost at times but soon found our way in seconds, not a large space but good variation. Love the coffee corners and food available.
Agree with some reviewers ... anyone visiting Christchurch please make the effort to go into the city and support the locals who are re building their city and their lives.

The re:START mall is an oasis in the middle of a sad and sobering space. After the earthquakes, the resilient Christchurch business have started up a shopping precinct in shipping containers to keep the city alive.
We wandered the wider streets which are now mostly demolition or construction sites. We found one small area about 4 blocks away from the re:START mall where a small arcade of delightful old shops have survived the earthquakes and businesses are still trying to trade. Sadly they were mostly empty of customers.
If you are visiting Christchurch please make the effort to go into the city and support the locals who are re building their city and their lives. Good on you Christchurch!

What a neat idea, had the most fabulous time, the grocer shop is fantastic and the Hummingbird cafe and staff were just wonderful. So many different shops to visit in such a great area, the souvenier shops were so reasonably priced, it was great, if I hadn't have had lunch at the Hummingbird cafe I would have tried the woodfired pizza's the aroma was to die for

Obviously since the earthquake Christchurch had been busy rebuilding and getting back on its feet. This innovative shopping area is constructed using shipping containers. Each shop exists within one, and sometimes two containers.
It is so refreshing to wander this colourful area plus there are some excellent shops and cafés. Excellent shopping here. I was told they are thinking of removing this mall once a permanent mall is built but that would be a real shame.
Well done ReStart mall.

I shopped in the restart mall for some gifts for my girlfriend and family during a short trip to New Zealand. The rebuilding of Christchurch is being poorly managed and going so slowly, but this was a great way to respond to the crisis. There are regular shops, a department store, some decent souvenir shops and arts and craft stalls. Well worth visiting...you will also be able to see plenty of ruined buildings and construction sites in the area! Close to Cathedral Square and the tram line.
