Owner description: Quake City tells stories of heroism, hope and loss from the Canterbury earthquakes. This special exhibition from Canterbury Museum explains the science and the phenomenon of liquefaction – when the shaking liquefied the ground and it bubbled up burying street and sinking buildings. Quake City charts the aftermaths of the September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes and the extraordinary response of the emergency services, international rescue teams, the thousands of volunteers who pitched in to help – construction workers, the Student Volunteer Army, the Farmy Army – and the incredible resilience of Canterbury’s communities. Exhibition includes some of the objects which have defined the Canterbury earthquakes including the spire of ChristChurch Cathedral and the railway station clocks which stopped at 12.51 pm on 22 February 2011. The rebuild section of the exhibition brings the visitor up to date with progress in regenerating the city and the recovery projects underway.

This Exhibition is impressive. Even if you know deeply about the earthquake history this Museum will teach you a lot. A lot of knowledge but a lot of respect as well. You learn what exactly happens, when an earthquake hits a City. You learn about the aftershocks and the effects an earthquake has Long after the first quake. You learn, why Christchurch is struggling until today whether which buildings are to be demolished and which ones can stay. And you learn about a Spirit that cannot be broken - in the end you will find a beautiful Vision that could give us all some hope for the future.

We enjoyed Quake City. It really tells the story of what happened to people duringthe earthquake. The Legos were fun also.

The displays are very interesting and thought provoking. It's a great place to take visitors to Christchurch who ask about the Quake-Aftermath whilst still showing the fabulous spirit of Cantabrians. The film with stories of survival will make you cry! I do feel there should be a few more hands-on type displays - the computer programme used for quake-proofing your home is great! Maybe a bit more camera footage to show when the quake hit? The one on show is amazing but I know there are others out there.

I spent over a good hour here and could have spent longer. This is a must see for all ages - there are short movie clips - teaching of what causes earthquakes - stories depicting what happened on those eventful days - very informative and came away inspired about how Christchurch is rebuilding again.

I think everyone who visits CC should visit here to truly understand what happened and what is happening currently in the city to rebuild and start again! I spent over an hour here watching the videos of the accounts of what happened to the people of CC!
