This was our second day in Christchurch, we had spent the first day walking around and looking at the city and how it was being rebuilt. The price on the door nearly put us off, but we are so very glad it didn't.
The staff were friendly and we got a helpful explanation of how the place was organised. There are a number of multi-media exhibits which are all worth watching. One of them, a 72 minute film of recollections of survivors, moved me to tears - it was inspiring and harrowing and highly informative.
Definitely visit. Plan time to sit and watch the films. Then step out and look with fresh eyes at this city.
As a p.s. I doubt children would sit through the 72 minute film, but you could skip that if you had children with you.
Kia ora Neil,
I'm so glad you made the decision to come through the door and visit us at Quake City. You do indeed see the cityscape in a different light afterwards. The rebuild of Christchurch has come a long way so far. We still have a wee way to go yet. There is a tv ad for cheese in NZ where they say "good things take time". How true.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. They are so appreciated. Regards - Paul (Quake City)
New Zealanders have to live with constant geological activity which, as superbly detailed in this exhibition, can result in major earthquakes. The story of these quakes focuses not only on the disastrous aftermath but on the resilience and determination of the people. We found the video interviews with survivors to be both moving and inspiring. Well worth visiting before walking around to view the ongoing regeneration of Christchurch.
Kia ora Brian,
Indeed the interviews are moving and inspiring. We are so lucky that those involved shared their stories. And you are so right when you refer to the earthquakes as part of our 'constant geological activity'. It is our position, at the meeting point of these plates, that has given us the spectacular landscapes we have.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review by the way. Kind regards -Paul - Quake City
A must do when visiting the beautiful city of Christchurch. So much information about the quake and many stories to listen to. Although we remember that horrible day It makes the earthquake real to us visitors.
Kia ora, I'm so pleased that you found your visit to Quake City worthwhile. It is hard for visitors to make sense of the changes that have been wrought, when you are looking from afar. I often say to people that, unless you have a connection with somewhere, so much of what has gone on passes you by.
Christchurch was,is and will be a beautiful city. Come back and check how we're going in five years.
Kind regards - Paul
This is a must see in Christchurch as it is so informative after such an important event in recent history. Being from so far away it was only by coming here that I could start to understand the immediate and long term impact of the earthquakes in Christchurch. The exhibition is very well laid out, and covers a wide range of aspects, such as the geology, the rescue efforts and the Christchurch community. There is also a video section which tells real stories from the day, very sensitively.
Kia ora, unless you have a direct connection to a place you only catch the occasional snippet on the news. There is usually another disaster, somewhere else, that takes the attention away. But, as you were able to see, the story of earthquakes in New Zealand goes back a long way. We have tried to cover the earthquakes from as many angles as possible. And as sensitively as possible. Thank you for taking time out to leave a review. We really appreciate it. Regards - Paul
Quake City in Christchurch gives the most complete story of the history of earthquakes in this area of New Zealand. I found it utterly fascinating and the video reminiscences of the 2010 and 2011 victims is compelling viewing. It doesn't pull any punches, but you will leave this exhibition educated, amazed and moved by peoples resilience and fortitude in the face of one of natures most demanding challenges. Would highly recommend.
David, thank you for taking the time to visit us at Quake City. The video is part of the exhibition that stays with you. We are so lucky that someone took the time to make it, and that those interviewed felt able to share their stories. I hope you enjoy the rest of you time in New Zealand and thank you for leaving your review. Nga mihi - Paul
Informative and thought provoking experience that provides a very realistic insight into this major natural disaster. The first hand accounts from the survivors, first responders and family of those who lost their lives was quite chilling. This is balanced with excellent information about the geology of NZ, what happened and the impact on infrastructure and pivotal city buildings. Well worth a visit.
Kia ora Debbie, Thank you so much for taking the time to talk about your Quake City visit. Like you I believe we have struck a great balance between the science of New Zealand earthquakes, and the impacts on the lives of those affected. Kinds regards - Paul
