“Really odd hotel”
Reviewed 20 July 2009

The way this place is designed is weird. After parking our car, we hadto use the Quest lift to get to our floor, then hadto come through the cleaners entrance to enter the hotel...

Room itself was ncie enough, a little cramped and not designed the best. Windows need douple glazing as you can hear people walking outside during the night.

We stayed here on our first night in NZ. The hotel is in a really good spot in the centre of town. Rooms are pretty basic but clean, free internet is great. Our room was pretty small and was apparently one of the bigger ones so I can't imagine how tiny the standard rooms are. Service was a bit lacking and unfriendly but other than that it was alright.

Nice modern rooms with all the amenities you'd expect, plus some you wouldn't. High speed internet access is free to all rooms, both wireless and wired. Only had a tiny TV set, but I wasn't coming on holiday to watch TV anyway. Our room faced the main road and traffic and pedestrian noise was quite noticeable (on a Friday night) so if you're a very light sleeper or can't sleep with noise that may be a problem. Bed was comfortable and an in room heater was available, though in the middle of winter that may not be enough and there were no extra blankets in the room (though may have been available on request). Parking is available for $15 on request, there aren't a lot of spots available so it's best to book ahead if you can, though we were able to get one on the day.

Close to many restaurants, cafes, shops and the city centre. St. Germain's French restaurant next door did a fantastic meal at great value, and after walking around the block looking for somewhere to have breakfast we ended up just next door after getting our breakfast voucher from reception.

I would stay here again if I came back.

We stayed here in May 2009 - the location is great for getting about the city - close to be able to explore the city easily. Parking available and quite reasonably priced. Staff were all friendly and helpful and chatty.
Was a different experience to the normal standard hotel, apples and free internet in the hotel in room and in the lounge was fantastic.
The only downside was the noise in the rooms at the front of the hotel from the street and passing people from clubs and bars at night - it kept us awake for hours. The rooms at the back are much quieter - but if you stay and get room 4 ask to change - the floor of the room actually slopes downways and it creaks appallingly - you couldnt move in the room without the whole room creaking and shaking!!

Sorry but this hotel doesnt live up to the chic, hip image it tries to portray on its website. It is in fact a dark, dated, shabby place, that seems to have been renovated into a hotel on the cheap. If you have a car you see what a rabbit warren this place is, with multiple levels and stairs to get to the carpark.
We requested a quiet room with king size bed, this we got, however the overall quality of the fittings and furnishings was all a little too shabby for my taste. I know at this price you dont expect the Ritz Carlton, however it was plainly obvious whoever was doing the fit out and decorating was doing it on a shoestring budget and without a clue. It looks cheap, it is cheap but unfortunately it wasnt that cheap. The only positive was that Glen on the front desk was extremely courteous and helpful and went out of his was to make us feel welcome.

This is a great variation to the predicatably Hotel experience. The location is fantastic - a stone's throw from the Cathedral, and the room - although small was comfortable (We had 2 double beds in ours) Loved the access to Seasons for beakfast and Octagon for dinner, as Off the Square guests! Loved our stay here - slept well ... no problem with noise.

We booked this through the Accor web site as a 4.5 star hotel and paid for a premium room. What a dump! When we enetred our "premium room" my partner said "if it had bunk beds it would be a back packer's" and he was so right! The room was small, dank and dirty, furniture chipped, appliances broken and repaired with sticky tape.

I complained at reception and was told that we were lucky as we had the best room in the hotel. I said if that was the case show me a standard room. They did. We did have the best room in the hotel!

We found this place so depressing, the attitude so 'tell someone who cares" so off -putting, we decided to move to the Herritage Hotel across the street and loose the two nights we had paid for, and we are very glad we did.

BTW The Herritage is superb and a similar price.
