A quirky Boutique Hotel yards from the square. The owner is obviously passionate about art and good design. Comfortable bedrooms with complimentary wifi.A mature staff efficient in every respect, always keen to hear how you are enjoying your stay, while offering advice on where to eat and places to visit. A home from home, spotlessly clean and triple glazing ensured a good night's sleep. Trams pick up and drop off by hotel entrance. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby.

Hotel Off the Square is a bit quirky, but in a good way. The staff is friendly & helpful, the rooms clean, if a bit small, some off-street parking, but the best thing is their outstanding location--just behind the Cathedral in downtown Christchurch. You can walk to nearly every attraction in town!

This is a cozy no frills hotel with a great city centre location. The tariff includes secure off street carparking with access to the elevators. Great artwork adorns the walls both in the bedrooms and public areas. We had three rooms of which the twin was small with an awkward layout. The other two rooms were doubles and handsome in size for single occupancy. They were well equipped with all the usual appliances in the bedrooms ; my bathroom was pleasantly large but quirky with a very shaky glass shelf ( Iam unable to comment on the other bathrooms).
We stayed two nights and consequently experienced the result of the accommodation service which left a lot to be desired - very careless but hey this can be rectified with good supervision and management. Would love to see this unique little hotel succeed so come on Tim get your management staff to develop operational criterion and hold them responsible for achieving the targets. Hey thats what you pay them. The only other staff we encountered were those stationed on the front office and each were exceptionally friendly and efficient. We loved this little hotel despite the careless accommodation service and will recommend it to friends and family visiting Christchurch. Give therecommended Irish Bar Restaurant located next door -a wide berth. UGH

I read about this hotel in New Zealand Chic. We stayed in one of the large San Fancisco style loft overlooking the main street. Amenities in the room were okay. Reception staff were always obliging. But beware of the noise in the street at night - "boy racers".

My husband and I booked one of the Hotel Off the Square's "San Francisco Lofts" (really just two apartments in a building a couple of doors down the street from the hotel) for three nights. The experience was so awful that we left Christchurch a day early.

To begin with, the apartments are above a raunchy head shop advertising "hash" and "party pills" (see photo). You won't see that in the hotel's information. Just outside the door to our "loft," the hotel stored janitorial and other supplies, piled into a heap and roughly covered with a blanket (see photo). A trash bin stood at the bottom of the stair to the street door, and it was jammed to overflowing with bags of kitchen garbage, with extra bags lying on the floor next to it (see photo). The hallway stank like a dumpster. When I complained to the hotel, I was told that the rubbish was an ongoing issue with the owners of the other apartments in the building. I was told it would be taken care of. Thirty hours later, it still hadn't been, and the stink was horrific. My husband complained, and was required to write out a complaint to the building owner (a paying guest fighting the hotel's battles?). Hours later, the garbage was finally removed. But by then, the maid who had "cleaned" our loft (housekeeping is abysmal) had left our trash in a smaller rubbish can next to our door. It stayed there until we left.

We decided to leave when we cam home from dinner our second night to find our loft -- which had all widows shut tight -- stinking of truly horrible, acrid curry from the Indian restaurant a few doors down the street. We couldn't open the windows for air on that very warm night, and couldn't banish the smell. We couldn't sleep at all.

The loft was poorly cleaned, the dishwasher was broken, the bed linens were cheap and tatty, the "king" bed was actually two twins pushed together with a crinkly plastic pad stuffed into the gap between the mattresses (which were worn out and swaybacked), there was a thick layer of dust under the bed, bugs crawled out of the floor drain in the bathroom at night, the ceiling light in the bathroom was out and was not replaced even after I notified the hotel, the drain in the bathroom sink was clogged, the upholstery on the sofas needed cleaning, and the lint filter in the clothes dryer looked like it had never been cleaned. In short, this place is poorly maintained, and very poorly managed. The information folder for the hotel proclaims, laughably, "We are chic," and announces that "transparency" is their aim. Wrong and wrong. This place is just awful.

Thank you for spending the time to write a review of the hotel - we appreciate the comments you've raised. Clearly in this instance we've let you down and we would, when you're next visiting Christchurch, like to rectify that.

Our Loft Apartments are located three buildings down the street from the hotel.

Your comments regarding the housekeeping supplies being outside the door to your apartment have been noted and the supplies are now stored in an unobtrusive way.

We apologise for the conduct of the staff member on reception at the time when he failed to deal with the rubbish in a satisfactory manner. We have put in place an improved refuse management system for the building.

The bed in the loft apartment you stayed in is a split king bed - consisting of two single beds joined together, such that it can be split if necessary. This is an increasingly common bedding configuration in hotel rooms. Not only is it a practical solution, but many guests have commended us on the level of comfort gained by the reduction in partner disturbance.

The mattresses are hotel grade and less than two years old - we're sorry you didn't find them satisfactory.

The Herbal Pill Shop is in the next door building and is not below our apartments. There is a Cafe in the building below our apartments. The Herbal Pill Shop is a legal business allowed under Government legislation that we have no control over. While we are not enthused by the nature of such businesses, it's not our prerogative to judge, especially given that we have never had any trouble from them. We are located right in the centre of the city and this offers the vibrancy and business of a central city area.

Once again thank you for your comments and we have most certainly treated them with the seriousness that they deserve, hence our written response and we have taken steps to ensure that future guests are not inconvenienced in a similar manner.

I was pleasntly surpried when driving up to Hotel Off the Square - although it was so tiny it took a good half hour to find whilst driving. The lady at reception was very helpful and friendly and we were amazed that such a lovely boutique hotel allowed us to bring our dog. They had even upgraded us to a room with a balcony so she could go outside! Top marks!
The rooms were clean and comfortable, with blackout curtains that let me sleep for hours. The only thing wrong was that in the bathroom the paint was peeling a bit in one corner but that is only to be expected in an enclosed bathroom! The other room we had booked for my sister was lovely. Bright and sunny with a view over bustling christchurch. Our room was a little darker but no less pleasent. Free internet, tv room and apples (yes apples!) all made a slightly quirky yet fun hotel. It has a very modern, young feel without being too over the top and making you feel old. The parking was easy - although there was a charge for it! But if you are an art fan, come to the hotel for a visit as the corridors, rooms and reception are chock full of sculptures, paintings and other delights. The price too was good including breakfast in bed which felt luxurious and like we were being spoilt - good choice too! Over-all we very much enjoyed our time here are would definately come back again!
