The hotel wasn't quite complete but you would not have really noticed.

A modern hotel rebuilt after the quake with a great bar and restaurant.

The breakfast was awesome (as all the Rydges Hotels have).

The gym wasn't open but access to Les Mills was offered, I took and run and did some circuits in Hagley Park (recommended).

The only thing this fell down on was no iPhone / iPod docking system in the room. This has happened a couple of times and it is a bit of a basic in case you are working in your room or just getting ready in the morning.

Staff were super helpful and yes, they have Heineken on Tap! :-)

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

Thanks for the feedback Mark, we're glad you enjoyed your stay. The great thing about the new building design is that the remaining 2 blocks to be opened are closed off from the operating hotel which means very little disruption to guests. The remaining rooms to the hotel are due to be completed early next month.
We're glad you enjoyed Bloody Mary's it really has been a talking point for guests and locals alike, especially breakfast.
Little tip on the ipod dock, our Premier rooms do have a USB compatible IPOD/ Phone dock in them. We haven't rolled them right out just yet in case Apple go and change their plug size again! Got to love obsolete technology!
Cheers,
Rob.

At the time of writing this is clearly a partial reopening - apparently just under a third of the room inventory is currently available for booking but they expect to be fully operational (except for the penthouse) by around the end of January.

As the previous reviewer noted, it is obvious that construction and fitting out is still taking place, but being in Christchurch at this point in time that sort of thing is to be expected. Construction noise wasn't an issue. Some polish is required but will presumably take place as the hotel is completed.

Stayed in a Deluxe King room. Definitely a bit of "new hotel smell", but I didn't find it unbearable like the previous reviewer did. One thing I've found with Rydges is that the product offered is reasonably consistent between locations, and that's definitely the case here. King bed is good, furnishings and in-room amenities are typical of a 4 - 4.5 star AU/NZ hotel. A pleasant surprise was finding 8 usable power sockets (+ a double power point in the bathroom). If you've ever travelled with gadgets you'll know where I'm coming from!

Disappointed to see that wifi is not free when this is a new build and some other Rydges locations offer it (such as Auckland). However this is not unusual for this class of hotel in Australia or New Zealand.

Service? I can't fault it so far. From my ungodly hour arrival due to delayed flight to now the reception, housekeeping and restaurant staff I've dealt with have been great (and indeed, my compliments/appreciation to the chef for the last meal of the night on Sunday!).

Price? I'd say it reflects the class of hotel and restricted availability at this time. As the hotel is completed and accommodation in general becomes more readily available in Christchurch I'd expect it to drop slightly. That, and there's always the 10% discount by being a PriorityGUEST member.

Overall? If you can handle the fact there's still construction activity and wear the slight price premium at the moment you can't really go wrong - just use 3G with a local SIM for your data requirements (which most readers will probably do anyway). I'll certainly be looking to stay here on my next trip to Christchurch.

Thanks for such a detailed and fair account of your stay Hendikins, I don't think there is a whole lot more we can add! Being a Priority guest you do get 50% off internet costs, but yes its not quite free (for now).
We are actually hoping to move the opening of the remaining rooms forward a little, even as early as mid December. We'll keep you updated for sure. Thank you for pointing out that while some works are continuing, there was no noise disruption.
Cheers,
Rob.

We stayed here in early November 2013. It was a brand new hotel and part of it was still under construction during our visit. If you could forgive a bit of construction mess, then it is worth considering. The opening special included a $25 dining voucher + buffet breakfast.
The carpet was so new that it had this nasty chemical smell to it. I opened the balcony door as I found the smell unbearable.
New hotel means clean new bed, pillows and quilt. no bed bug worry.
Also it makes the cleaning easier if you tend to disinfect every switch and remote with an anti bacterial wipe like I do.
Unlike most hotels in Asia, I noticed NZ hotels offer no slippers, comb, or cotton buds etc amentities. But Shampoo, conditioner, soap, hairdryer etc are standard.
Complimentary breakfast was offered during the soft opening. It was surprisingly good. Simple range of buffet breakfast compared to big hotels but it was really delicious. Much better than the breakfasts I got from Peppers hotel in Lake Tekapo.
Although I think 220NZD a night is a bit expensive for Rydges, there are not many hotel choices in Chrisctchurch after the quake, and being able to sleep in a brand new and comfy bed is priceless.

You have certainly pointed out a good number of benefits to staying in a new hotel. We're glad you enjoyed the new Beds and Pillows. It's unfortunate the new carpet smell was a bit much for you, it is one of the very few downsides of a brand new room!
Its also nice to hear the breakfast was a surprise, it has been a feature for many of our guests thus far, we have been getting terrific feedback.
The balance of hotel rooms should be opened in mid December, hopefully on your next stay the 'New Hotel' smell has settled down a little (but not disappeared completely!).
Cheers,
Rob.
