Rydges Latimer Christchurch
Ranked #10 of 146 Hotels in Christchurch
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 February 2014

At the south part of downtown Christchurch is the newly opened Rydges hotel. Given that it is so new, everything is immaculately clean. Service is professional too. Definitely worth considering as an option for business hotel in downtown location. Downtown is very quiet, and eerily empty so this location gives you a chance to better view the impact of the 2011 earthquake.

Minibar: good selection including a very humorous chocolate bar that made me laugh; won't spoil the fun for others.

Internet: Bought the unlimited 24 hr packages for up to three devices and downloaded an entire series of a TV show within a couple hours! I had the impression that internet on the South Island was touch and go. Rydges high speed internet dispelled that myth!

Bathroom was a small square that was functional and bright. Plenty of counter space. Big mirror, bright lighting, square glass shower.

Bed: fantastic support, just firm enough not to broadcast every move yet soft for comfort

Noise: very peaceful and quiet spot (stayed on weekend so very little traffic)

Location: half a block from the cardboard cathedral; 10 min walking distance to RE:Start retail hub and what used to be a bustling downtown. It is hopeful to see businesses such as Rydges opening up again to bring much needed foot traffic and I've back to the Center of the city after the 2011 earthquake. Many lots are still fenced off, and buildings deserted, a reminder of the destruction of nature's forces.yet, I see lots of hope in that old facades are held in place by shipping containers and supports until a time Christchurch will rebuild. Definitely check out RE: Start area, an innovative solution to bringing people back to the downtown.

On a one way street so keep that in mind when driving here.parking fills up but there is enough.

A nice stay in a nice hotel. It grows on you after you explore the nearby area and see that there aren't many options that don't put you beside empty lots or deserted buildings. Would stay here again if back to Christchurch.

Thanks for a great and detailed review. We're very proud to be assisting with bringing people back in to the CBD. The location of the hotel beside Latimer Square and the newly proposed green belt makes for quite a peaceful stay as you have pointed out. We're glad you enjoyed the amenities too. Keep an eye on our minibars, an exciting new menu is just around the corner.
Cheers,
Rob.

The Rydges is new.... Very new.
So everything is clean and neat and nothing is worn.
The beds and comfy and towels are very nice.
Service was very very good and the breakfast range was excellent even though on first appearance it appeared quite small.
I will say at breakfast they ran out of some items very fast because of a large bus tour group, but replaced them fast too. Don’t be scared to ask for more if something is empty.

The room design is not ideal. No beside lamps, the toilet is badly positioned in the bathroom and the ironing board is hidden in a slim cupboard I did not initially spot. Also not enough power points by the bed.... seriously... they started from scratch and made the same mistakes 20 year old hotels made.
The gym was not ready yet but they give you access to the local Les Mills which is TRULY AWESOME. one of the best gyms I have ever seen anywhere…. seriously.

The restaurant is very funky and they are clearly aiming to give a high standard of food and service.

While you are there, take a walk to cathedral square, check out the devastation and support local food businesses, there are still plenty there struggling to run a business as the CBD slowly returns to life.

Thanks for your feedback, we'll also pass your comments on to the team at Les Millls, they will be stoked!
We're glad you enjoyed breakfast. Providing cafe quality food means smaller portions turned over quicker. You won't find green eggs or a soggy hash brown here! We're glad we kept up and like you pointed out, don't be shy in letting us know if we're not. We're generally not too far away.
While difficult to change, we do appreciate your comments re our new fit out. There are individually controlled ceiling lights above each side of the bed and right under those a double power point. Granted one of those has the alarm clock plugged in but with another 2 points beside the leisure chair and another 2 at the desk we thought that might be enough.
The toilet is tucked in behind the bathroom door because mostly people have it closed when they do their business. It's not a large bathroom by some standards but we felt the economy of size vs time spent was important and for 2-3 people, its good and allows more living space.
Its great to see our guests getting out and supporting local businesses as well, getting people back into the city is such a great thing for Christchurch.
Cheers,
Rob.

Stayed one night at the new Rydges. the hotel is brand new with beautiful ammeneties and a lovely restaurant / bar.

the rooms are large, bright and extremly comfortable. we ate in Bloody Mary's restaurant and teh food was well priced and great quiality. The staff are 100% attentive, professional and eager to help you.

Christchurch itself is still in a state of repair but this stay made our time in Christchurch a positive one.

There is still plenty of work to do in Christchurch, but it's comments such as yours that are exactly what we need getting out there! CHC is on the mend and there are world class experiences still to be had. The return of tourism is exactly what we need to help get the rebuild kick started!
The team in Bloody Mary's will be chuffed! Thanks for your review and for supporting Christchurch.
Cheers,
Rob.

Nice, new place to stay and only open about 3 months. Everything is new, but hotel lacked a sense of warmth to it and it was very sterile environment. White marble and black chairs in lobby but not much else. I hoping not all of the rebuilt Christchurch will look and feel like this!

We certainly get your point of view, we've even been called Spartan in our finishes but rest assured, we're not quite done yet! We've still got a few rooms and the Penthouse to go! A long with some additional artwork for the rooms, the remainder of the foyer styling includes stone feature walls, some funky wall papers, rugs and coffee tables. If you had a chance to check out our Restaurant Bloody Mary's, you'll get the idea...
Cheers,
Rob.

The rooms are very spacious. Could really fit 2 queens which would have suited us better than a king and single. Great fridge as it fit our bottles as well as the minibar stuff. Nice, compact bathroom. Overall, very clean and comfortable.

The reception staff were all lovely and very helpful esp. after my son accidentally burnt himself. Can't remember any names but every staff member we came across was polite and willing to help.

The buffet breakfast was pretty good for $29 each. Good variety of food and drinks. Only negative was that they were a bit thin on staff so it took a while for our dirty plates to be removed.

The gym wasn't ready but they have an arrangement with Les Mills just a 5 min walk across Latimer Square. They were still finishing off parts of the hotel but there was no noise or disruption from workmen.

Free parking is a bonus but no free wi-fi in the rooms.

Overall, we will definitely stay again when we're in Christchurch. Looking forward to seeing Rydges continue to develop.

Thanks for your review, we look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Very friendly staff at this new Christchurch establishment. Room was well-appointed and spacious. Main criticism was of the restaurant/bar staff: half were great, the others really needed a lesson in customer service. And if you plan to have the buffet breakfast in the morning, book the night before for the discount.
Hotel is well situated to Cathedral Square (2 blocks walk) and Container shops and also easy to get around major thoroughfares of the city. Free parking.
Overall good value for money and would stay here again.

Thanks for your review, the great thing about Rydges Latimer is you're far enough from the construction to have a peaceful stay, but close enough to see the rebuild conveniently.
We're glad you enjoyed your stay. We'll be following up with the 'half' of the restaurant staff you mentioned to make sure they are getting on board ASAP. Otherwise it sounds like you had a nice time, thanks again for your comments.
Cheers,
Rob.

We chose to stay at the new Rydges for a few reasons - firstly to support a new hotel, secondly because I am a "Black" GHA member, and thirdly because they had some great rates compared to the other option we were considering!

Online booking etc. all fairly straightforward.

Check-in was fine. The person checking us in didn't seem to know what a Black GHA membership entitles you to (double room upgrade - I think we were perhaps upgraded one level, but it wasn't explained), late check out, free wifi etc. We didn't need the late check out, so I didn't ask. We did get the free wifi, but I had to ask specifically. Having travelled so much for work in the last 6 months and stayed in three other GHA hotels where they fall all over you when you have Black status (separate check in, lounge, upgrades, customer service personally contacting you before you arrive, etc.), it was not at the same level of service, but hey, also not the same prices!

The room was perfectly nice, obviously very new. There was no interference from the ongoing construction, although we did arrive late Friday afternoon and depart Saturday morning. The temperature was controlled with an actual wall unit, which I haven't seen in a hotel room in a while! It was very hot in the room when we arrived as the sun had been streaming through and the aircon was switched off.

We had a drink in the bar before we went out for dinner, which was nice. I also had breakfast there in the morning (the full buffet) - it was not bad - the baked beans were delish! There were only about 4 other people in the restaurant, so I can imagine it is difficult to keep up the quality of a buffet when you don't have a huge amount of traffic through. No one asked if I wanted a coffee or anything, the one staff member seemed to be very busy setting up the restaurant for lunch (putting out wine glasses etc.), even though it was only about 9.30 in the morning!

It is a short walk into town and there was a staff member at the front desk who was very helpful with directions etc. We were shocked to see Christchurch for the first time since the Feb 2011 earthquake (we had been after the September 2010 earthquake, but not since then).

Free and easy parking was a plus.

Thanks for your feedback JoJo, we're glad you enjoyed your stay. It's disappointing the guys weren't more confident with GHA membership details, it's something we have been working on to ensure we get it right. I did notice that you made your booking using your Priority Guest number. Due to the multiple membership programs Rydges acknowledge, company policy is to provide the benefits of the membership by which the reservation was made. Once again, if the guys had been a little more confident this should have been explained, I do apologise for the confusion.
You've made some great observations about service which I will certainly be discussing with our team. As you can see from other reviews, we're finding our feet quite quickly. A few finer details to work on and of course the completion of the hotel (end of January!) and we're looking forward to a very exciting new year.
Regards,
Rob.
