We were a couple and were really amazed at the standards maintained by the Hotel. Cleanliness was top notch, very friendly staff. The Best part is the Location, right at the centre of the town, walk to most of the attractions from here. The breakfast spread was too really good. Would highly recommend it to others too.

Room Tip: Would recommend choosing Mountain View rooms, rooms facing the other side of the town

I spent just one night in the new Novotel in Christchurch. The staff was enthusiastic and friendly. The room was very clean, with a view over the sad cathedral (damages by the earthquake).
If you want try the complementary coffee, please ask the right cups.

Having not seen the damage done by the earthquake 3 years ago i was shocked at the devastation that is everywhere in the CBD. shocked that it was still there and hadn't been fixed and shocked at the scale of it. there are still boarded up hotels/offices/shops and cafes.

in the middle of it all are a couple of new hotels, next to old ones that had been destroyed partially or fully by the earthquake. it was literally like staying in the middle of a eerily deserted war zone.

the service was great in the main and when they screwed up our wine, serving it warm after our meal had started they apologised and gave us free dessert.

it's the design of every aspect of this hotel which is bizarre. from the layout of the bar/restaurant to the suite design.

the TV in the bar is on a wall surrounded on both sides by glowing lights that dazzle you as you attempt to watch the screen for example. the bar/restaurant area in general looks like it's been thrown together in a haphazard way.

the suite is even more bizarre. the sink in the bathroom is outside the shower/toilet! the shower gel/shampoo was in the outside sink part and not in the shower! the sink is effectively in the living room part of the room...

the living room/bed divide is so weird as to make you question what kind of blind designer they used for the layout. there is a glass wall you have to get around to reach the toilet from the bedroom which is the middle of the night in the dark means you hit it! just not user friendly design at all and a real waste of space.

such a shame for a new property that it is both funky and badly designed at the same time!

Dear ChrisJR2013,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. Our concept bathroom design is unique to our property and while most travellers find it handy (2 people can make use of the bathroom and washbasin at the same time), I do completely understand that this may not suit others.

We do have excellent staff in the hotel, who are ever keen to please and I am glad to know you were well looked after while staying with us. It is always good for us to receive feedback from our guests, both positive and negative, as we look at this as an opportunity to improve our services.

ChrisJR2013, thank you again for sharing your comments. I hope you do chose to stay with us for your next visit to Christchurch.

It's still early days in the rebuild so well done Novotel on committing to the city centre.
The facilities are very good and staff excellent. They are all very keen to please and genuinely happy and optimistic about their city. The hotel is spotless and clean.
The only downside was that the bed was so hard. Maybe after a few more guests, the mattress will soften but at the moment it was just a bit too hard for me.

Dear 105FLSTF,

Thank you for your fantastic comments. Our staff are truly an asset to us and I will certainly share your comments with them.

It has certainly been a challange for all involved for us to return to centre city and we are proud of this achievement. No doubt we will see Christchurch City come back to life soon, better than ever before.

In the mean time, I hope to see you back in our hotel and thank you once again for sharing your comments with us.

To get the main negative out of the way first, the bathroom washbasin is basically in the middle of the bedroom area (see photo). So there isn’t any privacy if you are sharing the room, but I guess it means you can brush your teeth/make a cup of coffee/watch the news, all in one smooth movement! Washbasin multi-tasking. With very little shelf space, you will also find this area becomes quite cluttered. The designer of this unusual layout should not be given any further assignments.

Otherwise, the room has good functionality: comfortable bed, safe, tea/coffee/fridge, TV with plenty of channels, excellent desk with international electric socket.

There was a very good view to the banks peninsula, over the city’s cathedral which still awaits its ultimate fate (see photo).

Wi-fi in the lobby area is restricted to 30 minutes, with totally rubbish reception making it virtually unusable. It costs a fortune in the room, so you probably won’t bother. But there are three Macs in the lobby with internet access. Consistently friendly, helpful staff.

The location is extraordinarily quiet in the evening: there are no restaurants, bars, etc, nearby. But it is very interesting to see some of the post-quake developments which are all within a few minutes walk, such as Re-Start, Quake City, New Regent Street and the new temporary Cathedral. The central bus stop is 5 minutes walk away, the Museum/Botanic Gardens 10 minutes walk and there are three large supermarkets around 10 to 12 minutes walk.

However, if you want a hotel, rather than a motel, in the centre of town, with a great room and staff, I would recommend the recently re-opened Novotel.

Dear Airlineconsultant,

Thank you for sharing your comments. We do indeed receive several mixed comments regarding our concept bathroom design. I certainly understand that while this suits certain travellers, it may not suit others. As you have mentioned, it does allow 2 people to get ready for their day at the same time.

I am pleased to hear that you not only found our rooms to be functional, but also enjoyed our convenience location and fantastic views.

Thank you for recommending us and do hope to be able to welcome you back in the near future.

We checked into this hotel that is newly opened after post earthquake refurbishment. It's great to see a hotel back in the central city. We had a standard studio and the receptionist gave us the choice of a room with plenty of sun so it was just lovely. The beds are fantastic as they are new and we had a great nights sleep. There is a fairly good hotel gym that we used and the rooms were very comfortable. The hotel seems to be quite well sound proofed as we found it very quiet. We were on the 8th floor. Staff were very efficient and friendly, we would definitely stay here again. We stayed here after a horror trip in a campervan so it was a great "Rescue" by Novotel! Nicely decorated, very happy all round.

All but brand new hotel as apparently had only recently opened before earthquake struck. From the outside looks a bit strange as everything around it has been demolished or fenced off, but once inside the hotel is excellent. Nice spacious room, well equipped, comfortable bed. Staff all very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended and right in the middle of city (although there is not much city left know). Only thing slightly unusual was that due to size of bathroom the sink is outside the bathroom and mirror folds out from wall.
