“how it has changed”

our first visit back to the city since the earthquakes, it is soooo different. But with the tram now running, things starting to happen it is well worth a visit and a stroll, especially on a nice sunny day.

“Looks good!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014

Can't believe there made a street full of shops and cafés out of containers. It looks brilliant, hope they keep it in future when they get all the buildings sorted out. I was so surprised how bad the city suffered! It will take years to rebuild, so sorry for the locals.

“Regeneration at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

A really unique shopping area in Central Christchurch. All the main retailers & banks are located in shipping containers as temporary premises. There's a good vibe in the area with a few street entertainers and craft stalls. The people of Christchurch have been truly resilient in the face of adversity and cashed street captures their fighting spirit. It's great to see so much re build underway and so many great plans underway for the future in and around the area. You'll find a good selection of retailers here, but be realistic in your expectations - it's not like a main shopping street in other major cities - the city is still getting over the effects of the earthquake so there's not the big stores you'll find elsewhere. Definitely worth a visit to understand both the scale of the devastation and the progress being made to rebuild.

“Meh...Is a wreck, like the rest of the city”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2014

Cashel Street, like the rest of the city, is stuffed.
Don't know why it's even listed on this site as an attraction.
The only good thing here is that some thinkers and movers have been able to get the meatheads to allow them to set up the container mall, which in itself is a grand feat and architecturally intriguing.
So by all means pay it a visit, but it feels to me like the last-gasp flurry of activity and flash of a drowning seagull in a sea of detritus.

“The spirit survives............”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2014

Great to see the improvised and innovative use of containers to allow local businesses to carry on as usual after their world had literally fallen down around them. It was great to feel the buzz of the place, the busy cafes and coffee shops with performing street artists all adding to the experience and atmosphere
