I really enjoy our regular trips to Restart. There is always lots to do: cafes, market, street entertainment, art, Ballantynes, the English grocer, base pizza, great planting.

Things are starting to change too with containers moving, portaloos coming back in place of the container toilets etc. While its nice to get the building started, I do hope that they retain some of what has become an iconic mall.

It rained for the two days we were in Christchurch and this coupled with the damaged buildings and roads made it somewhat depressing. But good on the Kiwis for the initiative in setting up the shipping containers as a shopping area and we look forward to coming back at some future date to see a Christchurch at its best.

So much of Christchurch city centre has been destroyed by the two earthquakes but the pioneer spirit of the Kiwis is apparent in the new shopping centre built from freight containers which gives the visitors a new and different shopping experience.

For a city so badly shaken the restart mall in Cashel Street is like a breath of fresh air. It has been set out very well with garden plots, and enough eating places to suit all tastes. The innovative use of colored containers is great. The crowds the use it is testament to it's popularity

Before I went to Christchurch, people had commented that not much is left of the CBD since the 2011 earthquake. These people implied that there's not much to see, but they missed the point. The Cashel pop-up mall consists of shops made of shipping containers and is part of the heart of the new CBD, along with the nearby Cathedral Square. The pop-up mall has good shopping, including serious coffee places, hip clothing stores, market stalls and upmarket department store Ballantynes. At times the atmosphere is surreal - one day a damaged apartment building was being demolished next door while the buskers and coffee-drinkers continued their activities undeterred. This is an example of the spirit of Christchurch today, where the CBD looks like a war zone but also features public art works and improvised meeting places that have been put there since the earthquake. I saw a lot of German tourists and I think they would understand that Christchurch, like Berlin, knows how to make art out of loss.
