The Port Hills are the playground of Christchurch. You can hike or mountain bike; ride the gondola up or simply drive up Dyers Pass Rd to the Sign of the Kiwi (sadly, still closed). A drive along the Summit Road in fine weather affords stunning views in fine weather, from Lyttelton harbour, to the wide sweep of Pagasus Bay to the distant Southern Alps.

We got a ride up to the top of Evan's Pass Road and walked through Rapanui Bush all the way out to Godley Head. We then walked back via Boulder Bay down to Taylor's Mistake before heading back to Sumner. Took us about 5-6 hours in total and it was just amazing. I definitely recommend it!

Took the gondola to the top to access the walking tracks. We did the Crater Rim Walk. Took about 2 - 3 hours on a very hot sunny day. We walked at a leisurely pace & took lots of photos. The track is well marked, but rough underfoot so be sure you are wearing good walking shoes. Some steep slopes to negotiate on the undulating track, but you are rewarded with stunning views of Christchurch & Lyttleton. We watched some hang gliders taking off & had lunch perched on some rocks taking in the excellent views. Hats & sunscreen are also needed as there is very little shade. Dress appropriately for the weather conditions. The walk was very enjoyable & worthwhile doing while visiting Christchurch.

Take the Dyers Pass Road at the south of the city on to The Port Hills. Get to where the "Sign of the Kiwi" cafe was open before the earthquake. Turn right and head along Summit Road to find some stunning views of Lyttelton Harbour and across to The Southern Alps. Well worth the effort.

The Port Hills are definitely my favourite place in Christchuch both day and night. During the day you will have a fantastic view over the city and towards the hills as well as into the beautiful bay - absolutely picteresque! At night it's a romantic spot to watch the sunset and the lights of the city.
