“Quirky and fun hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2010

The Jailhouse accommodation is an unusual and quirky hotel located slightly outside of central Canterbury. As the name implies it is an old jail and, yep you guessed it, each of the guest rooms is a former cell. This of course means that the room size is rather small and spartan, however the uniqueness of the place makes it well worth a nights stay.

It is also conveniently located near the train station and my partner and I used it as a handy stopover point before taking the TranzAlpine express train to Greymouth.

It's a decent place to stay but it's a bit too far from the city centre. Being an ex-gaol means that it has a very harsh, cold ambience about it, despite, they've painting it a warm neutral shade.

We were travelling with our 7 and 15 year old children and thought the Jailhouse would be a fun experience for the kids as it was unique. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. The best thing about the place was the great coffee available at reception for a small cost. There was a nice area with lounges and tables and chairs to sit and enjoy your coffee and read quietly. Small selection of DVDs available free of charge. The lounge and tv rooms were quite warm. Accommodation was basic, as expected, but was very clean. Shared bathrooms were a bit of a novelty but they also were very clean and well maintained. We had our own room which had a tv and DVD player in it which was great for the kids. We did find the rooms very cold being in the middle of winter, and with the heating being on a timer which was pre-set to come on and off. Although once in bed it was fine as there were two dooners available for each bed. Communal rooms were located well away from the sleeping accomodation which was a plus as there was no noise during the night to interupt your sleep. We had never stayed in a backpackers before so we found the conditions quite basic, but if your looking for budget accommodation, you probably couldn't go wrong with this place - just make sure you pack your ugg boots and gloves!

I stayed here for a few days and loved it. The idea of converting a jail into accommodation is not unique (I know there's a hostel in Ottawa, Canada and at the other end of the scale the Malmaison hotel in Oxford, UK) but it makes for a great place, a little different to anywhere else I've stayed. I had a single room/cell which was spacious and comfortable, and the other facilities were also good, plus the staff were very friendly and helpful. Only minus point is the location a little out of the city centre, although it's a very pleasant walk through the park.

Easily one of the best places i've ever stayed, we initially stayed for four nights, by the end of the trip we had returned twice and spent a total of 10 nights here. It is spotless, the cleanest hostel we have been to, most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, the beds are comfy, the kitchen is modern and well equipped, it has a cinema, pool table, good laundry facilities & of course it is an actual authentic jail! One of the best and most quirky hostel experiences you could wish for. Trust me on this one, book with confidence, the only negative thing i can think of is that it is about a 15 - 20 min walk from the centre but for some people this may be a good thing as it is quiet at night.

This is a nice and comfortable hostel and was good for a bed for the night after a long flight from Thailand. Although it is a very comfortable and friendly hostel it is a bit out of the centre of Christchurch.
However it is worth staying at the Jailhouse for the novelty of saying that you have stayed in a Jail. The beds are comfortbale and staff very friendly.

We had a great time with this very quiet hostel. Previously a jail meant your property in the room was safe and very quiet. there is a curfew so that after 10, guests are asked to chatter and play games out in the reception area. The beds are so comfy, the mattresses are actually from the Melbourne 06 Commonwealth Games so a good night's sleep can be had by all. The showers are a little small and there could be an excuse for vending machines as the dairy shop nearby isn't open 24/7. The area around the hostel isn't great but there is a lovely stroll to the city centre past the river, punting and parks. I was annoyed that we could only pay the 10% deposit to secure the room in US dollars incuring foreign transation fees which seems a bit much for a hostel. Very quirky with car parking and cycles to hire. Millers Bar round the corner is great for meals with lovely cheap 'home' food.
