The best B&B we stayed in. Lovely hosts, great breakfasts and information on what to do and see. Jan & Leigh go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay to the full.

We traveled from the US to NZ and were married there on October 2, 2008. During our wedding and honeymoon, our stay at Anselm House turned out to be everything we hoped for. Jan and Leigh were the perfect hosts, very excited abut our special day and helping us with our preparations before we departed for the church. Although we were there without our family, it felt like home!

The B&B is conveniently located on a main road but around back it felt like a secluded haven overlooking the Avon river. We had pictures taken in the garden area before our wedding -- that's how nice it was. The room was very clean and comfortable and our hosts took every measure to ensure that we had whatever we needed.

One of the best parts of our stay was breakfast. Not only was the food great (love the homemade blackberry jam!) but we had the pleasure of Jan and Leigh's conversation every morning which, never having been to NZ before, gave us a wealth of information about life in their country.

If we even get to NZ again, Anselm House would be a first stop for us. Now that we're back home and settling into normal life, our stay there was a highlight of our trip.

Every aspect of our Anselm House stay was great! The ambiance of the home is superb being beautifully furnished and lovingly care for. The house itself is situated beside the Avon River and set with a lovely garden. Jan and Leigh are knowledgeable, interesting and friendly hosts. Our breakfast met all expectations. Anselm House was the last of many places we had stayed throughout our tour of NZ and it was the best.

Having read the existing reviews for Anselm House, there's not a lot more to add....I just wish I had added this review sooner.
Jan and Leigh are quite simply the perfect hosts, born to run a quiet B&B in such a beautiful location. The sight of Jan's beaming smile at the airport on our arrival (almost) made the jetlag subside, and in just the short drive to Anselm House we knew that we were on to a winner.
We only had an afternoon to explore Christchurch (and fix up a NZ sim card for the phone), which we did on foot quite easily. We fought the jetlag in the Daily Grind on Worcester Street, but eventually succumbed - luckily enough for us, we had the fantastic River Room, and could have slept for a week. The breakfasts, as you've probably already read, are the stuff of legend. Let's just say you won't leave the house hungry in the morning. But anyone can do a good brekky, it's the love that goes into it that makes it so special. I'm afraid you'll just have to try it for yourself...
Leigh took us to the train station to catch the early morning iron horse over Arthur's Pass, and we were on our way. My biggest regret is that we didn't get the chance to spend more time chatting with Jan and watching the rugby with Leigh over a few cold beers, because they were so easy to get along with, and so keen to ensure that we as first-time visitors to NZ started off on the right foot - for that, we are eternally grateful, and we will definitely return to Anselm House the next time we're in the neighbourhood.
If you're flying in to Christchurch, you could do a lot worse than stop off here before you move on...but you'll be kicking yourself if you only stay the one night.

This is a good place to stay. Helpful hosts, great breakfasts, free pick-up and drop-off from airport, free internet. Close to airport but can't hear planes! We would recommend this B&B

If you want to experience genuine New Zealand hospitality then you should stay with Jan and Leigh at Anselm House. We were there several years ago and recently returned for another 4 days - we wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Christchurch. Jan and Leigh are warm and friendly, but not intrusive. They are knowledgeable about all aspects of New Zealand life including farming, wine, the arts and tourist attractions. The excellent breakfasts include fresh fruit salad, delicious muesli, homemade jams and a flexible cooked breakfast menu to suit individual guests. The "River Room" is light and airy with a comfortable bed and a beautiful outlook over the Anselm House gardens and the Avon River. We enjoyed watching the two species of duck and the antics of their ducklings. We love the location, which allows for a healthy 30 minute walk into town through Hagley Park in combination with a different route through the Botanic Gardens every day. Alternatively, there is a bus at the door and shops and restaurants nearby. Jan and Leigh are the most caring hosts we have ever encountered in all our travels around the world. Their delightful home is a real gem.

We feel extremely lucky to have chosen the Anselm House. Jan and Leigh are perfect hosts--friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and very interesting to talk to. Because their bed and breakfast is very convenient to the Christchurch airport (as well as the city itself), we stayed two nights--our first night in New Zealand, and our last night. Both times, they greeted us with tea and cookies and fed us incredible breakfasts! After our first night, they also gave us very helpful tips about our driving route--where to stop for lunch, where to see especially beautiful scenery, etc. We followed each tip and feel that they really enhanced our trip. Our bedroom and bed were very comfortable, with a large private bathroom. Their garden, situated along the banks of the Avon River, is a quiet, lovely place to sit and talk. This is definitely a PERFECT place to stay!
