“Tiny rooms... great restaurant”
Reviewed 13 December 2013

i recently stayed for a week, with work. The hotel must have some of the smallest rooms i have ever encountered. The bathroom door needs to be kept open in order to dry yourself. As other reviewers have noted , it's the only building standing in a sea of empty space. The only other building is next door which my room had a great view of, is condemned and not occupied. Its right across the road from the “re start” shopping mall and Ballyntnes, department store. So you can do your shopping right there. Its very spooky being there in the middle of the city rebuild. There are so many empty spaces and crumbled ruins around.
The internet is free in the hotel lobby and the restaurant, but if you have to work, then you`re hardly going to be able to do it effectively in the hotel lobby. Sorry, not good enough. Ok for back packers and tourists.
The best thing about the hotel is the restaurant, the food is really very very good, especially dinner. In a budget hotel you expect more “pub style “ food, but this is a revelation. The breakfast buffet is very good as well.
The beds are very comfortable, and the rooms clean.
Finally, the staff are super friendly, and eager to please.

We expected more from Ibis. Our room for the three of us was very crowded. We wish there was a microwave, although clearly there was no place for one. The location is in downtown, but given Christchurch's condition since the 2010 earthquake, thus is not necessarily a good thing. The area around is like a ghost town. WiFi is limited to 30 min and only in the lobby. Parking is free only in the few spots across the hotel. Otherwise - $18 per day.

Dear 17suzan17,
Thank you for your review and for staying at Ibis Christchurch. Our rooms are not large but are comfortably appointed to meet our Ibis brand. As you point out we do not have microwaves in our rooms but we do have a restaurant which is very popular. We are located immediately over the street from the Restart Shopping Mall and within very easy walking distance of most of the sightseeing attractions. We do provide 30 minutes free wifi in both the lobby and restaurant and bar areas.
Regards

We chose this hotel for its location. Unfortunately we were received by a very unpleasant Staff when we checked in on 21nov at 4pm. She was not welcoming nor friendly at all! The room is very tiny, and can hardly fit our suitcases in the room! Very basic room, with a very sad view of containers and ruins from our room. Breakfast was not included, but kettle, tea, and coffee was provided. The restaurant was good, had a good dinner there and the staff were young and very service oriented. Wifi was a bit frustrating, not provided in your room, only in the foyer and for only 30 minutes per day! Otherwise, there are computer at the lobby that we can use, but have to cue!

Dear Adelaida Gigi P,
Thank you for your review and for for praising our restaurant and staff. I have spoken to our reception team and reminded them of their responsibilities and the need to be really friendly to all guests. Our 3 star plus hotel is located immediately over the street from the "ReStart Mall" which is a collection of very brightly coloured containers. This area provides good shopping and has become an attraction in itself. We do have wifi available in the rooms and offer 30 minutes free wifi in the public areas. It was good that you availed yourself of one of the 4 computers that we have in our lobby for guest use.
Regards

Ibis is one of the few rebuilt buildings in City of Christchurch. It is in a sea of cleared blocks and other buildings waiting to be demolished. Apart from this the Hotel is clean, modern and the rooms are nice. Excellent service and free WiFi and Internet in the foyer. Difficult to find because of closed roads but worth the effort.

Room Tip: Higher floors are better for views

Dear barry1943,
Thank you for your positive review of our hotel and especially the service. The rebuild of our central city is starting and so the Ibis is positioned really well for guests to see the progress as well as taking advantage of the close by sightseeing attractions such as the Tram, Punting on the Avon River, the Botanical Gardens and the Museum.
We hope to see you again in the future.

The last time we stayed at this hotel was well before the city was hit by a series of disastrous earthquakes, and in fact the Ibis is one of the few buildings open for business as before. Everything around it has changed dramatically, but I am very pleased to report that the hotel still offers the same great service at a very competitive rate.
During my recent visit it was a bit too chilly to sit on the restaurant's terrace, and now, with the current view you probably wouldn't enjoy it as much as before anyway. But the restaurant was busy and seemed a happy place.
My double room was very comfortable with a lot of space for luggage. Small but well appointed bathroom. Everything immaculate.
There are several PCs with free WIFI in the lobby, and staff are friendly and helpful.
Right across from the hotel is new container mall, well worth a visit.
Good value for money hotel.

Dear tingasiki,

Thank you for your positive review and it was great to see that you found our service and staff to be of the same high standard as when you stayed prior to the earthquake. We have worked hard at bringing some normality back to our part of the city and it is great to see that you recognise that.

We hope to see you yet again in the future.

Stayed 1 night, check in very efficient and staff knowledgeable. Room very clean and everything worked well. Breakfast good for the price. Parking should be cheaper.
Overall the hotel well, would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: higher floor rooms give a view.
