Balclutha is just a small town in the south of New Zealand, so not on the main tourist route. But for people travelling south, or to the scenic Catlins, or wanting a farm-based holiday, it would be somewhere you might like to stop for lunch.

Heart and Soul Cafe in the middle of the town serves cabinet food and casual lunch food. It probably has the best toasted sandwiches I have ever had at a very reasonable price. $5.80 for thick slices of nice brown or white bread and three fillings (two large sandwiches). I had chicken, brie and mushrooms, with the chopped chicken so plentiful some of it fell out and I had to apologise for the mess on the floor. They are a real bargain, and very filling. Served quickly so suitable for a quick lunch. A free newspaper provided (as well as ones for sale.)

I have rated this as four-stars - but it is not a poncy restaurant. It is very good for what it is.

(I don't know if it takes reservations etc.)

Great place for a Saturday lunch. Although the menu is limited the food was great. service was fantastic and great wine list.
This is a institution in Christchurch but could do with a tidy up looking a bit tired.

For many years misceos has maintained a consistently high standard in food and is renowned for its flatbread and pizzas. The barista seems to remember coffee orders even after long absences, and the service generally is friendly and efficient. The only downside is the noise at night but that might add to the atmosphere for some.

Friendly place, we had pizzas and enjoyed them very much. Beer choices were good and desserts too. Convenient for where we stayed but definitely worth the visit.

Have been a few times, service is always friendly, and the wines are good. The pizzas are really good, and the paté is too. This is more of a restaurant/café than a bar, and does not seem to stay open very late.
