Balclutha is just a small town in the south of New Zealand, so not on the main tourist route. But for people travelling south, or to the scenic Catlins, or wanting a farm-based holiday, it would be somewhere you might like to stop for lunch.
Heart and Soul Cafe in the middle of the town serves cabinet food and casual lunch food. It probably has the best toasted sandwiches I have ever had at a very reasonable price. $5.80 for thick slices of nice brown or white bread and three fillings (two large sandwiches). I had chicken, brie and mushrooms, with the chopped chicken so plentiful some of it fell out and I had to apologise for the mess on the floor. They are a real bargain, and very filling. Served quickly so suitable for a quick lunch. A free newspaper provided (as well as ones for sale.)
I have rated this as four-stars - but it is not a poncy restaurant. It is very good for what it is.
(I don't know if it takes reservations etc.)
