im amazed at the negative reviews! i stayed for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed my stay..management couldnt have been friendlier or more helpful and i appreciated the locked gates at the entrance! the room was lovely with a big balcony and no, i couldnt see the ocean but there are rooms on other levels that have sea views so ask before you book if that is what you require...on the whole,a really enjoyable stay! thanks :))

Basic apartment with standard facilities. Microwave and stove top in a large open plan kitchen/diner/lounge area with TV. Small functional bathroom and small bedroom but adequate. We had booked a one bedroom apt and it was a two bed so they had just locked the door to the second room. It was winter so we were glad of the air con and electric blankets. There is no service after you are given access to the room - i.e making up of room, change of towels etc but it is a cheap apartment.

We were looking forward to a great relaxing holiday with our friends & children. We didnt even bother checking in.
After driving along the main road we were incredibly worried about the suburb in general. We were stared down by 1 guy standing on the road as we drove past. About 75m away from the apartments is an old hotel completely boarded up with ply & next to that is an old shop boarded up in the exact same way. The apartments are surrounded by old delapidated houses with the odd exception.
When we drove down the long driveway we were met by a huge steel gate & needed a code to get in, which we hadnt been given. As we peered through the gate we noticed it looked like people lived there permanently, which was a surprise. The steel railings looked as though they were all rusting, even though the building is new.
Upon ringing the booking company, we were informed that the cancellation policy was that we lost the 1st nights tariff. I wouldnt mind that, except we didnt choose not to stay simply out of changing our minds, we chose not to stay as we believed the entire area would be unsafe. We have young children & their safety to think about.
We then had to spend 3hrs driving around trying to find an alternative. Not happy at all!!

Dreadfull location at the rear of other properties. The "beach view" apartment, (at the seedy end of town) had to be negotiated up three flights of stairs and if you squinted you could just see water in the distance. The apartments were untidy and full of large flies and assorted bugs, guests were also asked to sign a form requiring them to clean the apartments prior to their departure or extra charges would be incurred. The owner/manager was rude, unhelpful and totally disinterested in accomodating the needs of his guests. I would absolutely NOT recommend this property. It is definitely NOT the four star accomodation it claims to be.

We were travelling around the world and by the time we'd got to Christchurch we needed a few days of relaxing to catch up, do laundry and cook for ourselves (believe it or not we were fed up with eating out and take aways).

Beachlife is perfect for this. It's a way out of Christchurch in the beachside suburb of New Brighton. The location isn't particularly pretty, sandwiched on a narrow plot of land, set back from the main beach road, but it's secure and contained.

The two-bedroom flat was new and clean. Very large open plan lounge/kitchen/diner. Smallish double room and twin. Nice, bright shower room.

Large plasma TV with Sky and we were pleasantly surprised that we got free wi-fi too which was perfect.

The only issue we had was that it was on the chilly side. There is just one air-conditioning unit to heat the whole flat and it was set to a maximum of 22 degrees. We did complain but the manager wouldn't change it. Aside from this it was just what we wanted - we didn't have any problems with noise.

However, if you want to be in the centre of things, this isn't the place to stay. This is good for longer stays and people who aren't bothered about location. The local shops are a 2 minute drive and there is wonderful japanese restaurant/takeaway.

  • Liked — Quiet, free wi-fi
  • Disliked — Too cold

Most of our apartments are 2 to 3 times of the size of average hotel and motel units. So, it will take longer to heat despite of a 3.9kw heatpump (new generation of air-con). The bathroom has 4x275w infra-red instant heaters. Whether the temperature is set to 22 degree or 30, it will take the same time to warm up to 22 degree which is sufficient to majority of people. The apartments are double-glazed with thick walls and floor-slabs and oriented to utilise solar heat. Once reached certain degree, it will keep warm for a long time. The restriction is only to prevent someone to turn an apartment into a tropical resort in mid-winter season and cause serious condensation which could result water and mould damage.

We are happy to turn on the air-con prior to guests' arrival upon guests' requests and lift the restriction of max temperature if they will not over-heat the apartment.

Christchurch is cold in the winter and often reaches sub-zero degree at night and early morning. So, it is perfectly normal to take a half hour or a hour to warm up an apartment just as a car needs sometime to reach certain speed.

Just returned from a stay at Beachlife apartments. We stayed for 1 night in a ground level floor unit with 2 bedrooms. We had some challenges opening the entry gates, even though we had received an email with instructions for the code. The manager was not present at the time of arrival but another gentleman handed us the keys so we could get in our room.
The apartment looks brand new, has a flat screen TV with FreeView satellite connection.
Chattels are present but not high quality. It looked great but the quality of the bed sheets (felt like plastic to us, cheap quality) and the noise from the flat above kept us wake much longer than we anticipated.

The apartment is not sound proof which means you have to get used to bathroom noises from your travel companions and also hope the neighbours are in a relaxed mood while you stay over.

Service was very friendly and the area is also very nice. Secure car parking is provided. Make sure you have some form of transportation if you want to get around because the partments are not exactly close to the city or other attractions except for a great location by the Brighton beaches.

Enjoy the new interiors and very reasonable rates while they last as I am not convinced they will look the same after a few months renting out.

  • Liked — Clean and new interiors
  • Disliked — Noise and quality of the beds/sheets

As with all multi-storey buildings, noise can not be totally eliminated especially around the bathrooms. This brand new building are extremely well insulated between all units with thick concrete panels and floor slabs plus noise-stop wraps around all plumping pipes passing through other units. In addition, noise reduction batts were installed in the ceiling space. Furthermore, there is no ventilation pipes and hotwater pipes between apartments. All windows are double-glazing. Overall, this building is much quieter than many old buildings and establishments on the main roads.
Regarding the comment of "plastic like sheets", it is totally not true. All sheets are made of 400 threads or more 100% cotton supplied by one of the largest commercial laundry companies in New Zealand. They are very smooth and far superior than ordinary ones for domestic use.
