“A nice site for a campervan”
Reviewed 8 July 2012

A nice site for a campervan but we had mixed feelings about this Top 10 site. The playground and toddlers room was thoroughly enjoyed by my little boy, although the tv/kitchen room felt cold and uninviting in Winter. A tip to enjoy the tv room that was passed onto us is to turn the heaters on 2 hours before having your meal. The shared amenities were warm and the water hot. Having access to a bath with a 3 year old was greatly appreciated, however the room was cold. All this being said, it was a clean site and friendly staff on hand to help.

I stayed in a studio motel. I am not sure of the classification of a motel but it was more like a small room with kitchen facilities and with a small en suite. The unit was cold when I entered as the power is operated when the key is inserted in the light switch. I have stayed in many other motels that are lovely and warm to step into. Not this one! After an hour the unit started to feel cosy with the wall heater going on high. The unit is refurbished to a very good standard especially the bathroom. There is also a heated towel rail. I thought the $127 a for this unit was expensive especially because of the lack of space and no arm chairs to sit in. The unit was clean except for the top duvet cover which needs laundered or replaced. The noise from the cars stopping and starting at the traffic lights outside the gate is a down side. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The motel was located well away from the city centre but was fine for my needs.

Room Tip: The photo of the holiday park shows modern motel units. That is not where I stayed. Make sure you cl...

We tried to use Top 10 sites wherever we stayed in New Zealand. The standard was always high and the accommodation clean and comfortable. We used self contained cabin units which had bathrooms and limited kitchen facilities sufficient for a breakfast or a takeaway evening meal. Linen, towels and soap were always included. They were also easy to book ahead and would undertake to book local attractions for you. Aaron Lodge is in the suburbs about 2 miles away from the centre of Dunedin. There are some good takeaway nearby which we used for our eveining meal.

This campground was a bit smaller than the others we visited but not cramped like queenstown for example. The kitchen and toilet/shower blocks we used were basic but nevertheless the park had everything even an indoor playroom for under 5's. It had a few toys in there to keep my little ones occupied which was a novelty as most other sites are suited to older children. It had a family bathroom which is always helpful. The lady at reception was nice. The outdoor playground was on a big slope needed a bit of a clean. The whole place is a mix of old and new. There were new motel rooms which looked nice from the oustide. There is also a new-looking block which housed the family bathroom, computer room, tv room and under 5's playroom with the indoor swimming pool (another novelty). I can see why there are a lot of mixed reviews. Maybe if you've got the money stay in one of the new motel rooms but at those prices you might as well look for one in the actual city. As for campervan sites, it was fine and close to showers and ktichen so cant complain.

Like other reviewers travelled in NZ for 20 days in a camper and this was the poorest site for welcome and facilities. It is also one of the most expensive places to stay. You can walk into Dunedin from the site but you do have to climb up and down a steep hill!

We have just completed an 18 day campervan trip around the South Island and have visited a whole range of sites and this was the worst. The receptionist was as cold as ice and when I presented our booking confirmation she totally ignored it. When we got to our allotted space it was right on the corner of the road and appeared to the worst possible despite there being plenty of other alternatives. And there was a site van parked on it so we couldn't park the van. So off we go back to the reception to be told abruptly that "we don't have a van." When she finally relented and agreed that it WAS their van she said we should wait until it was removed. After furher protests she finally relented and allowed us to park elsewhere.Had we had an alternative we would have left right then but we had booked for two nights and didn't want yet another disagreement with this objectionable woman. The facilities were very dated and cramped and there was a general lack of investment throughout the site; the pool reminded me of the one I used at school in the 1960's ( with a prominent DO NOT...notice outside.) It's such a pity because in the end we loved what dunedin had to offer and the fantastic chinese take away down the road. But we left with the predominant memory of a receptionist who needs to learn how to smile, realise that she is supposed to provide a helpful and welcoming service for the money that visitors pay and to stop giving the impression that she is doing you a favour by even speaking to you. PS We may have been unlucky because we noticed that a different lady was on when we left and she had a pleasant smile and appeared to be enjoying some banter with her customers!

We had a powered site for caravan & awning. Nearly impossible to get pegs into stoney ground designed for campervans. Ablution block is old & crummy - needs updating. Showers were dirty, narrow & had no seat / shelf for items. Spoke to a staffer at our site to confirm how long we would be staying but he didn't pass this on to the office staff & I was rudely told off at length when we checked out. Children loved the pool and the grounds & it is very handy to town but I would not recommend this site for kiwi families wanting a typical camping experience, or those who are not self contained.
