FIrst off the positives. The lounge is good, cosy and lots of stuff to do. The intrnet is a real plus too. The stff, in particular the irish lady are friendly and helpful. Rooms are alright too. It had a lot going for it if you are a 24 hour party person

Every door carries a sign saying that it is shut at midnight, but nothing is, so on our first night we were treated to dub step from the kitchen at one o'clock. On the second night, no word of a lie, they started to redecorate the kitchen at 1pm, and it only stopped at 1.30am after a bit of complaining on my part. The lounge is occupied by stoned nightowls. I can't see the point of making rules just to break them myself. The kitchen is a touch grimy too.

Lovely staff, great lounge with free computers, free internet, free playstation, lots of DVDs. A good kitchen with free tea and coffee. Nice clean rooms. The best shower I've ever had in a hostel!!! Great place to stay. Near to the local attractions (The Octagon, pub and restaurant area) and bus routes. Good facilities and free internet. Excellent lounge. A relaxed vibe. Good for mid 20's to early 30's.

We first went to central backpackers Dunedin but they were full so they offered us to check out if there were beds available at Penny's. They did NOT tell us that they would immediately make a booking for us and they did NOT tell us either that we would each have to pay 3 NZD on top for their booking. So we ended up paying 28 NZD each for a shabby bed in a dorm instead of 25 NZD!!!! And I don't blame them for that but Penny's because they cooperate with Central backpackers and allow them to charge that extra money!
I never experienced that before. In Taupo, for example, we were at a backpacker's that was full and they just called another lodge, made a reservation there for free, so we just went there and payed the normal price at the lodge. This is how it should work!!

The beds were very uncomfortable. They were bunk beds and when the person above you just moved their pinky, the whole bed would shake. There was old chewing gum sticking to the bed above my head. It was overall a very filthy and uncomfortable place!

We stayed here while Elton John was playing and we were struggling to find a place to stay. The receptionist was very helpful and found us a decent room. The kitchen and bathrooms were of a high standard of cleaness. The TV room had a cool interior and the internet is free for paying guests. The only thing is that the mattress is not that great but the great customer service and facilities make up for it.
