“A great place close to town”
Reviewed 23 February 2012

Recently stayed at the Palms Motel with a dozen friends whilst on tour of the South Island. Very comfortable rooms which are nicely appointed - the Motel features were very good. However, what really made the stay great was the friendly helpful team of people lead by Malcolm - everyone really focused on ensuring we had what we needed and nothing was a bother - highly recommended and would return without hesitation.

Arrived at the Dunedin Palms ahead of time and were very well received and popped into a room straight away to drop off our gear. The rooms were very clean, modern and the beds so comfy. Very handy to downtown Dunedin. Thank you so much for having us stay and accommodating a heap of Harley riders. Well done we will be back.

Enjoyed our stay in Dunedin and the motel was what we expected except that the twin room we had was very small. There's v little room in the bedrooms for suitcases/clothes etc and the dining table needs to be pulled out from the wall into the entrance to seat four. However, it's very new, clean and also convenitently located without traffic noise.

My wife and I were passing through Dunedin on a tour of the south island. The motel was easy to find and had plenty of parking. The manager Malcolm was very welcoming and showed us a choice of the rooms available we picked a studio. The room was modern, light and airy with a large bathroom and all the amenities you would find in an upmarket hotel. Malcolm and his wife couldn't have been more helpful, although very busy they helped us plan our route to Queenstown and even booked our hotel there for us! Just wish we had longer in nz as would have loved to stay longer.

We stayed for 3 nights with 4 adults in a 2 bedroom unit. Given the price we expected this to be something special. It was not. Its only redemming feature was that it was a very modern unit however it was very very small in fact far to small for 4 people. We have stayed in many 2 bedroom units which are normally very large.

The room was also not made up when we were out.

Great location - close to the town and Speights Brewary. The Studio room we stayed in was clean, modern, but rather small. Shame the room was not made up when we went out, we were given clean towels etc when I spoke to the manager about it when we arrived home- but for the price - this should not have been forgotten.

This hotel was one of a dozen we stayed at in NZ. All the others had tiered charges for internet access - in practice, if your usage was very light (as with us) they invariably waived the charge on checkout. If you wish to download stuff or use Skype, for example, you pay for the privilege.
Not so at the Dunedin Palms. They charge a flat $10 a day, so if you are just checking emails and not much else, you are subsidising other users. I have no idea what it costs the hotel - they may just be price-gouging.
The hotel owners were away during our stay, so I couldn't raise the issue. My subsequent email on the subject was answered by the temporary manager. He said the owners would be "mortified and most apologetic" when they read the email on their return on 13th December.
Not that mortified and apologetic, apparently - I haven't heard a word from them. It is that attitude, rather than the irritating but relatively small matter of internet charges, that really leaves a bad taste
