We recently visited Dunedin, New Zealand while cruising on the Celebrity Solstice. Last March I contacted Chris Roberts at Back to Nature Tours about organizing a shore excursion for a group of 10 people. Chris replied promptly to my query and we quickly finalised the arrangements via email. He handled the booking process in a professional manner and was willing to adapt the day to the group's needs. We booked Chris' recommended shore excursion for cruise passengers and we couldn't have asked for a better tour. We were picked up and returned to the ship on time. We were able to see the sights of Dunedin before driving down the Otago Peninsula right to Taiaora Head to view the wildlife as well as the gardens at Larnach Castle along the way. Chris includes a pub lunch at Portobello in the tour price and this adds to the local experience. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and we have to say Chris impressed us with his knowledge of the local wildlife, his understanding of the local ecosystem and an obvious love for his home town of Dunedin.

We did a peninsula tour with Chris during our visit to Dunedin over Christmas 2012. We had a fantastic day for touring and thoroughly enjoyed Larnach Castle, the Yellow Eyed Penguin reserve and Taiaroa Head including the Albatrosses and the Armstrong Disappearing Gun. My husband was particularly pleased that Back to Nature was able to include the disappearing gun in our tour as no other companies would do this without missing the Albatross tour. We were very fortunate to see numerous Albatrosses flying which was spectacular. Chris struck the perfect balance between being an informative guide and letting us wander a bit on our own. Highly recommended!

We thoroughly enjoyed our day out with Chris. We visited most of the Dunedin photospots (Otoga University, Baldwin Street and the Railway Station before we went out to Lanarch Castle and gardens and stopped at a small pub for lunch.
After lunch we went to see the Albatrosses, but unfortunately they weren't playing game!
The highlight for me was the yellow eyed pengiuns and we saw penguins and chicks at theire nesting site through a series of Hides and tenches and we were so close!
Chris was great and was very informative. Overall a great day and well paced - picked us up on time and returned us to the ship in good time.
The only downside there is no time for any souvenier shopping if you want that.
I have no hesitation in recommending this tour.

We booked Back to Nature Tours for an afternoon hike on the Otago Peninsula. It was early spring in November and there was a cold wind blowing from the south and they offered us a time slot on the next day, when it wasn't supposed to be so cold, but we had other plans, so we went as originally planned. We were picked up by Chris at our hotel and turned out to be the only people on the tour that afternoon, but we went anyways, a tour for two. After driving and showing us some sights on the near parts of the peninsula, we stopped at Sandymount Hill and hiked down to Sandfly Bay beach. Chris let us set the pace and answered all our questions about the ecology, fauna, and flora that we passed. We arrived at the beach several hours later and were taken to a small hut for a hot Milo and a short rest. Then we hiked down the beach just in time to see the Hooker Sea Lions awaken from their afternoon naps and start to posture with each other and bellow. Unfortunately, we saw no yellow-eyed penguins come ashore, although we saw their tracks and heard their calls.
This tour lasted about 5 1/2 hours was a wonderful way to see a little part of the Otago Peninsula on foot.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day out with Chris. We had looked at Ship tours but none did all of the things we wanted - this did and we saw so much more in the day.
We visited Dunedin, Baldwin street, the dstation and we were lucky to see the farmers market whcih was on that day. We visited Lanarch castle and gardens at an unhurried pace and then onto a pub for lunch. After lunch we went to see the yellow eyed pengiuns with a nice walk along the cliffs an added bonus. We saw the penguins and chicks in their hide and we were so close! We the went to see Albatrosses and were lucky enough to see them . Chris was great and was very informative and answered all our questions. A great day, well paced - picked us up on time and returned us to the ship in good time. Highly recommended
