“Relaxing stay in a beautiful cottage”
Reviewed 27 April 2013

My boyfriend and I stayed in Bellbird cottage for three nights and did not want to leave! The cottage itself is beautifully decorated, warm and comfortable, and has a luxurious private spa which was perfect for relaxing in after a long day exploring. It is set in a beautiful garden belonging to the owners, Tessa and Vic who were extremely friendly and informative about the local area. We cannot recommend it highly enough and definitely hope to return in the future!

We spent Christmas in the Bellbird Cottage at Fantail Lodge on the Otago Peninsula, and couldn't have had a lovelier time. Vic and Tessa were fabulous hosts, and provided us with insider details of walks and activities which made our visit even more special. We hope to return!

This is my 3rd trip to NZ and 2nd time to Otago Peninsular. The Fantail Lodge is truly a hidden gem. Fantastic for $value, location, hospitality, garden setting, etc. .. compare to other places we stayed for this trip which include Akaroa Cottage, Lake Tekapo Cottage and Queestown Crowne Plaza. Easily get our vote for "Best Place to stay in NZ" :)

Firstly, if you are wondering if you should stay in Dunedin City or Otago Peninsular, my advice is to stay in Otago Peninsular for the beautiful coasts and stunning wildlife, and then go to Dunedin for your grocery or other city sights in a half day.

And if you do choose to stay in Otago Peninsular, I can't recommend Fantail Cottage highly enough.

It is a wonderful little house set in a pretty and spacious garden, and the house is well-designed and very comfortable, plus the kitchen has everything you need to cook a meal (while looking out at the resident fantail birds which visit the garden every morning). There are little touches such as videos and toys for children which are well-appreciated, and a bookcase full of novels (not that you'll have time!). The host Vic is warm and helpful, and charming with kids, but never intrusive. It is also just a short drive away from all the attractions on the peninsular, as well as to Dunedin. My number one choice should I visit the peninsular again.

Room Tip: BellBird's for couples, Fantail's for families.

We were so pleased to find this hidden gem! We stayed for 3 nights in Bellbird Cottage, which had everything we wanted. Set in a secluded lush garden, we woke up to the sound of birdsong. On site there is the owners house and another cottage (Fantail) which can sleep upto 4 guests. Bellbird had a private spa on the deck which was lovely after exercising or simply just star gazing late at night. The Penenisula is just great for Wildlife, make sure you check out Allan's beach for the Sealions. The owners were friendly/helpful but left you alone if you wanted privacy. I stayed just with my husband but Vic the owner should use the other cottage which I hope to stay in with my parents in the future. I'm looking forward to staying here again.

We stayed 2 nights in Bellbird Cottage in February 2012. It was one of the most attractive and comfortable places that we stayed in our 5 weeks in New Zealand. It is situated in the beautiful garden of Vic and Tessa Mills. Vic is a retired art teacher from the UK and does the very interesting art work which adorns the walls of the cottage. The kitchenette is well equipped and the hot tub is a real treat after a day of hiking. There is a steep track nearby that one can use to get to Lanarch Castle and the gardens. Beautiful views on the way up and down.

If you plan to visit the Otago Peninsula, I would highly recommend a stay at Fantail Lodge.

Room Tip: Both cottages are lovely, but the hot tub is a real treat.
