Having wandered the length of George Street on a quiet Sunday evening looking for somewhere to eat (closed cafes, fast food and asian restaurants apart) we resigned ourselves to coming into this bar out of desperation almost.

Our mood wasn’t improved a great deal when we found ourselves perched high on a bench seat with a wobbly table - the alternative was stools and wobbly tables. There were only a few other people in but at least the menu choice looked decent - mains included lamb, chicken, venison, salmon and our choice Rib-eye fillet. Prices varied from $24 to $32 (the steak).

Our server was very pleasant and organised a bottle of Stoneleigh Merlot which at $46 was always going to be a concern on the wobbly table but nevertheless tasted very good. The combination of good service and wine seemed to mellow matters.

The steaks were served as requested - medium and medium rare - with a blue cheese, mascarpone, grilled parmesan and herb gnocchi and green beans (we declined the offer of extra sides at $5 each). They were delicious, very good beef and lovely sauce.

For dessert we opted for Citrus Brulee and Sticky Date Pudding. The brulee, served in a cup, had the thickest surface layer of caramelised sugar I have ever come across and it was difficult to break! It was accompanied with lime shortbread and strawberry compote. The Sticky Date Pudding came with vanilla bean ice cream and butterscotch sauce and was probably the better of the two dishes although both were good. Desserts varied in price from $12 to $20 (for cheeseboard).

Despite the circumstances we left having had a very nice meal and thought the overall cost of $135 was fairly expensive for a bar/diner but offset by the quality of food and service we had no complaints.

We popped back the next day for drinks outside at lunchtime having unexpectedly met friends off a cruise liner and again service was friendly with the waitress even obliging by taking a group photo.

i come back here because i like it, although this time the food was a bit of a let down.
the calamari was a touch over cooked. i can live with that, but when they served the pork it still had the string on it! also the salmon was probably well over done, it was dry when served to me. i didnt even finish it.
however, the service was absolutely superb. the staff here are incredible and half the enjoyment of a meal is the food, the other half is the atmosphere, which the staff help to make great. i will probably go back, it was possible they were just having a bad night, or maybe just a bad couple of meals, when you produce that many dishes, a night, at least one has to be a bit on the rough side.

Previously alibi has been such a great place to dine I've always loved coming back. Unfortunately the food let them down a little this time. The calamari was slightly over cooked, as was the salmon which was a bit too dry to enjoy, the rolled pork was real choose to being over done and was made worse by the string being left in it.not good at all.
The staff however were excellent and again provided awesome service which didn't make up for disappointing food, but certainly makes a night enjoyable. This won't put me off going back here, it's still a great atmosphere with great staff, it was just not the best evening for food that day(everyone has to have a bad day one in a while)

Positives:

- Great location in The Octagon (on crn of George Street)
- Service great
- Good selection of beers/food

Disappointed - ordered:

- the steak (in Jus) - the steak sat on a bed of mash surrounded by a heap of liquid (ie, the Jus) - if the meal was not served in a deep dish the liquid would have run over the edges of the plate there was so much of it (and runny). The steak was also to come with fries - there were so few fries stuck on top of the plan and they were so thin, that I had to order a side plate of fries.

Whilst this may have been a one off, unfortunately not as my colleague ordered the same dish and it was served exactly the same as mine.

Won't be back for the food anytime soon.

Great place to have after work drinks on a Friday. Cheap however, get there early as limited seating available.
