Karitane beach on a fine day is a fabulously picturesque place. So much to engage with a geographically compact area.
Hire kayaks & paddle the estuary, or take a kayak tour to sea caves which are surprisingly intriguing. http://www.karitanecharters.co.nz/
Walk the historic Huriawa Peninsula/headland where Maori history is told with a series of storyboards; blowholes, cliffs, expansive sea views over to hills beyond.
Swings for the kids, a safe swimming beach and great surfing!
No camping grounds, plenty of holiday cottages to rent, and one top quality self contained apartment just a few meters from the beach http://www.tatahiseasideapt.co.nz/
You can get a coffee & hot pie or biscuits, icecreams etc from the local old fashioned country style shop.
Public toilets are available on the foreshore.
I know the area well, have personally done all the things I mentioned, ( there are lots more things to do that I cannot 'review' as I have no personal experience, just hear-say)
I sing it's praises as an off the main highway spot worth a visit.; a great place to drive through on the scenic route north of Dunedin, or to stay for a holiday or long weekend.
