“Dunedin central accommodation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2012

Have stayed four nights in a Junior Suite (top floor of building) - rooms have been renovated lightly, and are clean and quiet. Could do with wifi and more tv channels. NZ has Freeview tv which is not accessible. We had breakfast included with room rate and breakfast was ok. The juice on offer was not a good choice. We generally enjoyed our stay and the only two things that could do with a huge improvement are the car parking situation and the matress on the bed. The reception staff were very unhelpful when there was no space available on site. The hotel could do with a deal with the adjoining car parking that was hardly ever full. Wouldn't mind paying if I knew we had a park! The other thing is the quality of the mattress on the bed - VERY soft. We thought we were going to fall into the room below.

Room Tip: Junior suites are a good deal if you want more space. They are a lounge and separate bedroom.

Took advantage of their special rate which included a meal voucher. Excellent value! On a road trip around the South island and booked over the internet, was pleasantly surprised arriving after a long day of driving and sightseeing. Parking was a bit of an issue as the car park was already full, but managed to get a park out front on the street. Staff were helpful and friendly. Had dinner in the restaurant and the meals were large and taste, no complaints at all. The room was clean and had all we expected.

We had booked accommodation somewhere else that fell through. We phoned the kingsgate and they offered us a room at a very reasonable price and threw in a $50 food and beverage credit. Staff were friendly. Beds were comfy, breakfast was average. A stones throw to the centre of town. For the first time we had perfect weather in dunedin. We will stay again.

The Kingsgate brand seems to be the entry level of the Millenium chain. Some things seem the same in each. There is 20 minute free Internet service per day but you buy more time. They have washing facilities which are inexpensive and very useful for travelers. The Dunedin Kingsgate is conveniently located 2 blocks up the hill from the Octagon which has a number of stores, restaurants, the I etc. We stayed for 2 nights and got a great overview of Dunedin, truly a lovely place. The staff were quite helpful. If one has time you should go out through the harbor to see the albatrosses, a variety of other sea birds of the area and fur seals. Hotel restaurant had good Kiwi food. A rather annoying thing we noted in many New Zealand hotels was either a percent charge or a really silly $4 charge for using a credit card. An extra $4 on a bill of 100, 250, 500. If you need to charge travelers who tend to use credit cards, just hide the charge like the GST. Annoying practice but does not detract from our pleasant stay here in Dunedin.

We are a group of 4 travellers who chose to stay in here for its centrality of location - which is less than 5 minutes to Octagon, where George/Princess Streets converged. There are many dining establishments/cafe situated along here. The hotel is also less than 10 minutes walk away from Countdown Supermarket to stock up on one's groceries/supplies.
As we rent a vehicle with GPS, the roads built around Octagon give various options to reach one's destination. The ample parking space opposite the hotel - privately owned was our parking of choice as there was no parking attendant to hassle us.
The room is always clean and duly-kept by the time you return to your room. Though I must say that the pillows are flimsy to our liking. The TV set evoked nostalgia as compared to our fellow travellers which has a LCD TV set. Ours was a CRT TV set. We would definitely consider staying here again if we are ever here again. We like the residents and locals who are so pleasant, helpful and sincere.

Room Tip: All rooms face the city. Though corner rooms away from the lift location will be better.

This hotel is in a great location about two minutes walk from the Octagon (the centre of the CBD).
Shops, bars, restaurants are nearby and there s a supermarket about 10 mins walk away.
The room had a nice view over the CBD. The rooms are a good size and the bathrooms seem to have been recently renovated. The cleanliness of the bathroom was excellent.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
I will be staying here next time I visit Dunedin.

My 2 daughters and I only stayed 1 night in Dunedin however we found the Kingsgate to be ideal. It is superbly located, parking was fine ( although it's a bit scary when you are used to flat car parks!) and the room service we ordered for dinner was tasty. All the staff we encountered were friendly and professional. I would recommend this hotel as a value for money, well located and well run establishment. Thanks.

Room Tip: Not sure if all rooms have balconies, but it's great to see the lights of Dunedin at night.
