“Musty Smelling”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2010

The rooms smelt disgusting, so we asked for air freshener and a man came up a short time later to spray it. The nice smell lasted a little while but then it was musty again.
Close to the city centre. We were there on Christmas day and nothing was open any where so we spent the day washing and drying clothes. $2 for the washing machine, $2 for the dryer, and $2 for washing powder which gives you 2 washes.
The food was not that great, we had Christmas Dinner there and have had better at other hotels.

We only spent one night in Dunedin to avoid an expensive direct flight to Queenstown from Brisbane, AU. The location is favourable, with The Octagon (city centre) just down the road.

We booked online and requested a high floor and was pleasingly given a room on level five (highest) facing east towards The Octagon and Otago Habour. This provided a great view over the city, whilst still allowing for the northern sunlight to shine through in the morning.

The room is a bit dated and could be revamped in the near future. It was small but adequate, fitted with a balcony, old television set, lounge, mini bar, kettle and tea and coffee. I remember the double bed to be quite soft and comfortable. The bathroom appeared to have been renovated not long ago as it appeared more modern than the rest of the room.

I had forgotten about the included buffet and did not take advantage of it. However, the Jimmy Cook's Kiwi Kitchen downstairs for dinner was quite tasty.

We didn't interact with the reception much, but they were very helpful with checking us in and providing directions, as well as baggage storage after we had checked out the next morning.

We have stayed at the Kingsgate many times. It is an older hotel in a great location just up from the Octagon and an easy walk along George street (main shopping street) to the University. Every room we have stayed in has been north facing catching the sun nicely and having views over the city. The rooms are clean and have a balcony, older TV, an electric fan heater, Tea and coffee making facilities and mini bar. The bathrooms are quite new and smart with everything you would expect. My only bad comment is the beds - they are small doubles and a bit soft. The cooked breakfast is served in a pleasant dinning room, and quite generous with bacon, eggs, sausages, baked beans and tomatoes. In addtion to this you can help yourself to cereal, fruit (fresh and canned), toast, croissants, jam, yoghurt and friut juice. Tea and filter coffee is served at your table. The staff at the Kingsgate are always friendly and helpful. Free copies of the local daily paper are available to read at breakfast and in the reception area. The hotel has complimentry parking for guests cars. For $99 a night for two adults you can't complain!

The Kingsgate is in a great location, just down the road from the Octagon. For NZ$99 we had 2 beds, sitting area and a balcony. The view overlooking the city was excellent (except for the power lines). It does have too few car parks for guests but we were advised of this when we booked, however cars are pretty safe if left out in the street. A cooked buffet style breakfast was included in the price. We had no complaints about the quality, but if you want a second cup of coffee, you have to get the serving staff's attention as it is not 'help yourself'.

We had dinner in the hotel's restaraunt and it was excellent. I would say the best meal of the entire trip. I would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to friends.

This hotel has a handy location and was generally ok, although nothing special.

However it is badly let down by the restaurant breakfast, which was pretty much as bad as it gets. Choose a cheaper rate with no breakfast and go somewhere else!

Supposedly "included parking" was also disappointing. Their difficult-to-access car park does not have sufficient parks for guest rooms, so if you arrive back at the hotel a bit later in the evening you'll be forced onto the street.

Pleasant and helpful staff though.

We enjoyed our 1 night stay at a special promotional rate of $99 with breakfast.

The hotel is rather old but the bathroom was surprisingly new with a bathtub and bright lighting. Room was spacious, with a balcony and full length windows and as the hotel was situated on an uphill, there was a pleasant view of the residential-commercial buildings below.

Location was good - close to the Octagon city centre where the shopping, major attractions, eateries are.

Our room came with breakfast which though wasnt a spread, was very enjoyable as it was a buffet mixture of cooked ( the eggs, bacon and the tomato were very well done !) and continental breakfast.

The staff were professional and polite. Parking was free and there was demarcation of smoking and non-smoking rooms.

Our only grouse was the bed didnt seem to be very clean because we felt somwhat itchy during the night. However it was a mild case and we are sure this can be very easily addressed by the hotel management.

Overall, we would still recommend and return.

Booked the $99 bed and breakfast deal. You cannot get a better place to stay for this value in the city centre. Breakfast was reasonably good.

Parking was free and there was plenty of parking space. The octagon is less than five minutes walk away. All the attractions and eating places in central Dunedin can be done on foot.

All the rooms face North and overlook the city.

Decent three star hotel. Will stay here again.
