Owner description: Discover New Zealand’s only Castle, built 1871 by William Larnach, merchant baron and politician, for his beloved first wife Eliza. It took more than 200 workmen three years to build the Castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a further 12 years embellishing the interior. Larnach spared no expense on his dream home, which features the finest materials from around the world. The Castle is still privately owned and cared for by the Barker family who purchased it as their home in 1967. Decades have been spent on the Castle's restoration, with the family having restored empty buildings from ruin and assembled a large collection of original New Zealand period furniture and antiques. Open to the public throughout, this conservation project has been funded through admission fees. The family has always been committed to opening their home and sharing this significant period of Dunedin and New Zealand's history.Scandalous and tragic stories, spectacular tower views and a Garden of International Significance complete this enjoyable award-winning experience. Boutique Lodge accommodation is available in the Castle gardens. Weddings, Balls, Conferences and Celebrations are held in the beautiful 3000 square foot Ballroom. High Tea is also now served daily in the Ballroom at 3pm

So glad we went here to New Zealands only castle. What a lovely job the family does of keeping the castle so nice for us to enjoy visiting. What lovely furnishings also. We had a nice time walking around the grounds. It would be nice to return in the summer though & see the garden at a different time of year.

“Nice but overpriced”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Despite being called a castle, it is really a nice stately home. At $28 per adult for the gardens and house, is really a bit over priced. The gardens were nice enough but not massive, with some large lawn areas. Perhaps in summer there might be some more colour. The house is in most well restored and interesting. The rooms are furnished with period furniture, but there is little personal content and stories in the rooms to really make them come alive. The climb to the roof is worth the views over the peninsular. When we were there the cafe was being renovated and had been relocated to the the old stables. Menu was brief and the quality of food was basic.

Hi Wayne

Thank you for taking the time to review Larnach Castle and Gardens. Please understand that Larnach Castle is privately owned and does not receive any government funding. The income gained from entry fees is reinvested in to ongoing maintenance of the Castle and Gardens. Recently we have spent this money on earthquake strengthening, repainting the castle, general maintenance and upgrades and the development of a smartphone app that further increases the visitor experience. It's good to hear that you enjoyed the view of the Otago Peninsula from the top of the tower - I think it is worth the entry fee alone.

Best regards,
Michael

“Historically lovely”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Beautiful accommodation and stunning grounds and scenery - but - a long way out of Dunedin up a winding road that in winter can get icy. The staff are brilliant but if you don't want dinner at $65 per head (no negotiation) then it is a long way down in the dark (and wet) to find food.

“Great, even on a cold, windy, winter day...”
Reviewed 4 August 2014 via mobile

We found this place on our drive from Dunedin out to the peninsula - I'm glad we did! We didn't have much time, so we just walked around the grounds. Even in winter, on a cold, windy winter day, it was a beautiful walk. And since there were no crowds, a very serene walk, as well.

Hi dcbolden

Thanks for your feedback, it's great to hear that you enjoyed yourself despite the wintery weather you experienced. I hope you were able to warm up after your walk around the garden in the Ballroom Cafe in front of one of the open fires! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip and that we see you here again soon.

Regards,
Michael

“Lovely house and gardens”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

We weren't sure if we wanted to visit Larnach Castle or not, but were glad we did. Yes the entry price seemed a bit high, but we felt it was worth it. The house was very interesting, as was learning about the family who lived there. The view from the roof top was lovely, and the garden really beautiful. It just had a really nice feel here. You must visit if in the area.
