The house and its 'Garden of National Significance', within the city's Green Belt, can be experienced at 42 Royal Terrace, within walking distance of Dunedin's Octagon. Entry inside the house is by guided tour only (1 hour, max. 15 People per group). Tours commence daily at: 9.30am, 10.45am, 12 noon, 1.30pm, 2.45pm and 4pm. “Visit to Olveston, Dunedin”

Olveston is not well known amongst tourists and potential tourists. Which is quite sad.
A friend told us all about Olveston, having come across it by chance, and insisted that we include it in our planned tour of the South Island.
I booked the full tour for four of us - two brothers and their wives - all religious Jews (two from Melbourne, Australia and the other two from Israel).
Olveston turned out to be one of the main highlights of our visit to New Zealand.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and did not object when we ran over time - I think that she got as much from our knowledge of Judaism as we got from her knowledge of Olveston and the family who built it.
If you are Jewish, or have knowledge of Jewish customs, don't even think of visiting the South Island without a visit to Olveston - and take the extended tour!
You will not regret it!

“Late afternoon Art Tour”
Reviewed 21 May 2014

My companion and I joined joined the 2 hour Art tour of Olveston at 4:30. Our guide was excellent and showed the art collected by the Theomin family, the only family to have lived there from 1905 until the 1960s. Their taste was predominantly European but with some Australian and New Zealand artists. In addition to the art works, we saw the rooms in which they are displayed in the state they were when the family lived there. An excellent tour

“A Dunedin highlight”
Reviewed 21 May 2014

This is the best stately home visit experience I have ever had, and I have been to English houses. The property is so interesting, due to the family's interest in purchasing the latest mod cons of the day. It is beautifully appointed. The tour was also very well done; the guide was clearly very well informed. Well worth a visit, even if you are only in Dunedin for a short time.

I've had come across Olveston House by accident, but coming back repeatedly is definitely by choice! Real history so close, you can walk through it, see the furniture, look into the kitchen, have a look at the artwork in its true historical context. Yes, Olveston house is a must see!
