“Fabulous views ”
Reviewed 3 May 2014 via mobile

Not cheap but a very pleasant four hours getting a guided tour up the river valley and gorge. You get to go places that are unreachable by road and see some wonderful sights. The train wasn't busy as it is getting to winter. It might not be a good if the train is full. Food and drinks on board are reasonably priced. Glad we went.

“Pukerangi train- fantastic”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We did the Pukerangi train trip leaving at 2.30pm.It is expensive but if you go to "go book" website they do have some special process if you book in advance. The scenery is great. You get allocated a seat but you can walk around. The open air areas at the end of some of the carriages are best for taking photos as sometimes due to the sun angles it was hard to take photos out of the carriage windows. There is commentary all the way and a nice café on board. There are some people that get on a Pukerangi as they have just finished the cycle trail and so the return trip had more people on it.

“Best attraction in Dunedin”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

This was the highlight of our trip to Dunedin. It has been many years since riding on a "real railroad" and this was great. We took the four hour journey that leaves at 2:30 pm and returns at 6:30 pm. It was less crowded than the six hour journey on the early train. The sightseeing is very enjoyable and there is no particular physical effort necessary to sit in a train seat......I loved that! It would have been a good idea if we had brought water bottles and some food with us. There is food and drink for sale on the train.....but it is mostly light snacks and fairly limited. The several stops along the way were just right.....a short opportunity to stretch the legs and get some brisk air. Good fun!

Hello and thank you for your very complimentary review. We are flattered that you should think us the best attraction in Dunedin - thank you.
Your comments about the snacks on board the train are somewhat true but we are working on this so it be much better in the future!
Thanks once again - hope to see you back another time.

“not cheap, but worth the money”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

It's not a cheap day out, and there is little to 'do' other than wonder at the sheer grit of the workers that built this gorgeous, (pun intended), railway.
From the moment you get on at Dunedin Station you are taken back in time with the period carriages and the rickety rails.
The journey is up the Taieri gorge and it clings to the side, at times you seem almost suspended in air as the train almost back around on itself.
Go in good weather - if that's possible, and take a good camera.
There's little to do in Middlemarch, the end of the line, other than wait for the return trip.

“Taieri Gorge Railway”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

Beautiful rail trip through the gorge with great views over the stunning gorge. Our Conductor was a real character and had loads of stories and historical information which he shared along the way. Food and drinks available, including Cheese Rolls! We wished the train went right through to Middlemarch (lovely little country town) more often, as we had to get on at Pukerangi (where there is nothing!)
