Enjoyable day on an historic train travelling through beautiful countryside. Children (and adults) will love it. Like stepping back in time.

“Not cheap, but well worth it”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

The scenery on the Taieri Gorge Railway was spectacular. We've done the trip up Arthur's Pass near Christchurch as well, and this was right up there.

There was no snow when we travelled, but doing it in the middle of winter would be just spectacular.

Well worth the $89 cost.

“An Absolute Must”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

I live in Dunedin, so I have the opportunity to ride this train--and I do. I'm not a train buff by any means, but this has to be experienced. The train is an old-fashioned one with foot plates between the carriages and in the summer my family and I spend the whole trip standing outside on them rather than inside. The health and safety Mafia haven't reached NZ yet, thank God, and you can actually experience whizzing through gorges and tunnels and over vast drops just standing loose and unrestrained outside!
The trip goes almost to Middlemarch, through some very spectacular rock gorges and over viaducts and rickety old bridges. There are two "stops" one for photos and one so you can walk across one of the old bridges. It's like being in the old gold times.
I've done this trip with visitors and just for fun with the family and we love it every time.

“Worth the time if you have 4 hours to spare”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

If you have the time this is a great 4 hr train trip out of Dunedin, it starts on the main line and then turns off to wind through the gorge. There is a running commentary on interesting things that can be seen on the way. Not to much history to be overwhelmed, stops along the way to take photos and you can stand in between the carriages and take photos while moving.

“Fabulous views ”
Reviewed 3 May 2014 via mobile

Not cheap but a very pleasant four hours getting a guided tour up the river valley and gorge. You get to go places that are unreachable by road and see some wonderful sights. The train wasn't busy as it is getting to winter. It might not be a good if the train is full. Food and drinks on board are reasonably priced. Glad we went.
