Mercure Dunedin Leisure Lodge

Our family of 5 stayed there for a couple of nights (2 adults, 2 kids under 8 and a baby) and thought it was o.k.

While the room wasn't huge (2 double beds in it) it was enough for us as we were really only sleeping and showering there. The beds were very comfortable and the room was extremely warm throughout the night which was great considering how cold it was in Dunedin at the time.

It had sky tv on a flat panel lcd screen which made for good viewing.

Bathroom was small but tidy and adequate.

The reception was very helpful and polite.

Although we didn't dine there the restaurant looked o.k although some of the decor is just starting to look a bit dated.

We paid $109 per night and at this price we thought it was a good deal and if you were paying around that amount I'd say go for it.

Comfortable warm surroundings at a good price!

I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel/motel which is very easy to find coming from the north on SH 1. It is situated between a couple of main roads - on a sort of island.

My room, 72, had a view of the Botanical Gardens to a degree, which were on the far side of the main road. It was large and modern with plenty of room for clothes and had a settee and a nice big bathroom Certainly early in the morning you could hear passing wagons although ironically I had some of my best nights sleep here for ages. I think it would be better to try and get an inward facing room that overlooks a attractive and spacious hotel garden that has several seats. The botanical gardens are well worth a visit- only 2 minutes away.

There isn't a lift but there is only one upper floor and they will help you with your luggage if required. Plenty of parking which is a distinct plus compared to other Dunedin hotels it would seem. However it is situated about a 20 minute walk out of the city centre although you can get a bus in and can drive into the city centre in a few minutes- plenty of short term free street parking.

I stayed in mid February which is the height of the tourist season and there were coach parties in each of the 3 nights I was there. However the hotel put on a really excellent buffet each night which was a real bonus. The breakfast was entirely self service including coffee but perfectly acceptable. There is an internet connection by reception - $5 for 30 minutes.

Overall the Mercure Leisure Lodge exceeded my expectations and is in my view a great place to stay for a quiet few nights.

We stayed here as part of a coach tour of South Island.
It is away from the centre of Dunedin in a quiet area with a pretty garden around and up to the doors of the rooms. The rooms we had were spacious and well decorated. They were clean and comfortable. There did not appear to be many other guests, but the staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent, but the dinner on the Saturday night was a little disappointing.
As mentioned in an earlier review, there is a haggis ceremony as part of the entertainment for tour groups and this was really great fun.
We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it for anyone with a car to get around and into the city.

On our return to Dunedin we decided to try another chain and another type of accommodation. The hotel looked lovely with its well maintained lobby and gardens. The receptionist showed us to an exceptionally large and exceptionally clean room. The bathroom was also large and clean. The hotel is at the northern end of the town, close to the university, the Botannic Gardens and a McDonalds but quite a hike from the city centre. We were there to see the albatross, the penguins and to eat out so we didn't utilise the dining room which looked very nice.

My only complaints about the hotel are the airlessness of the room and the noise. Despite the room's size it was very stuffy at night. Due ot the climate there is no air conditioning and there was one small window without any kind of security on it. More importantly, the hotel is positioned between two major roads and all night long forestry and other heavy trucks thundered by. In the morning, to add insult to injury we had deliveries and garbage collection right outside our room. If you sleep well and rise early then this might be OK but otherwise it was an expensive, uncomfortable night.

We had a pleasant enough one night stay here, the room was adequate and the bathroom was nice. The lack of other guests (I only saw about 6 other people) gave the place a strange atmosphere though. We were feeling pretty exhausted during this stage of our NZ trek so we just ate in the hotel restaurant. We were slightly reluctant because it was empty, but surprisingly I got one of the best meals I had in New Zealand. I know the hotel is only 2 floors, but it would have been nice to have a lift when we were moving our bags.

Arranged around elegant gardens, the hotel is well designed. Our room was large and comfortable, the public areas pleasant and the staff helpful.

It is very well situated for exploring both the city and the surrounding countryside.

It's a favourite for tour groups(who get a Scottish piper and haggis ceremony with the package) so we opted for room service dinners, which were uniformly prompt and excellent.

Our only real gripe; internet connection in our room was dial-up only with a per minute charge. Use of the business centre was a reasonable $8.00 an hour, but the computer was set up for email and internet only - no FD or CD drives, nor USB port for Flash drives. (Slightly more reasonably, no download capability). This meant I could not send an urgent file back to work, still less attach a photo to an email.

They are working on costing for broadband or wireless in the rooms.

Just undergone a refurbishment and re-branded under the Mercure banner. Rooms were modern, bright and appealing with good fittings. Balcony overlooking landscaped garden. Restaurant was literally empty but served good food. Service was good and location on the edge of town.
