“Quiet, comfortable and great value”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

We spent 2 rainy days and nights at the Mercure. The larger than normal rooms and comfortable furnishings (including a very comfortable bed) made the stay more enjoyable than it would otherwise have been.

While the motel is just off one of the main roads into Dunedin, and only a few minutes from the centre of town, it is nonetheless very quiet. The rooms are built around a large and beautiful lawn/garden area. There is ample car parking space.

Our room was well furnished - including table and chairs and a sofa. Large TV and reasonable range of satellite TV stations. Bathroom was a good size and very clean. Only complaint was the cost of the internet - $30 per day after the first 30mins of free access.

The room cost was very reasonable ($85/night). Excellent value given the size and quality.

We would be very happy to stay here again on our next visit to Dunedin..

We stayed in room 408 for 1 night in Feb 2014. Room had 2 comfortable double beds and was clean and spacious. Outside door on to a garden/courtyard area. Fair distance from the centre of town and located on the main road in to the city but traffic noise was not a problem. Walk across the road to the lovely Botanic Gardens. Had dinner at McGavins restaurant, very nice meal and friendly wait staff. Would stay again.

Room was a good size, clean tidy and staff were friendly, parking was easy.
The breakfast was okay. Not a major but only two towels in the room for two adults.
We used a small packet of plunger coffee and then discovered we had to pay for it - really!

This was a good place to stay location wise out near the gardens just off the SH1. Very clean and tidy, nice rooms, breakfast was good. The only downside was we found it very noisy. Not from traffic but from other guests. Noise seemed to travel into the room from the corridor which woke us. It may have just been our room was bad. Other than that was a good place to stay. We are Accor members so this was our complimentary night - so can't comment on Value.

The motel is in an excellent location, easy to find as one drives south into Dunedin, with plenty of parking. Spent 10 days at there, and found the rooms spaceous, and the service excellent. However, I did find the lack of Sky channels on the tv to be somewhat disconcerting. Good dining at night, but we consider the cooked breakfast to be rather expensive for what was provided. There is a booking anomaly that a traveler needs to be aware of: It seems that Mercure doesn't own the motel - it merely has naming rights. The motel has a policy of allocating bookings to different booking organisations, with no flexibility if one organisation has used their allocation. This causes problems when trying to book online and you find that on one (the Mercure) website rooms are not available, whilst on another website rooms are available. The attitude of the management was that if rooms were not available online then I should have rung the motel direct to enquire if rooms were available. I thought that that was the purpose of looking up a website!

Room Tip: There is no lift so if you cannot negotiate stairs ask for a ground floor room.
