Scenic Hotel Southern Cross
Ranked #14 of 61 Hotels in Dunedin
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 January 2013

We've stayed at the Southern Cross twice in the last year when we've been to events in Dunedin. The hotel is clean, well laid-out and is in a superb location for staying and visiting the heart of the city. The 'superior' rooms are large, have great furnishings & fittings and the bed is incredibly comfortable. Staff are efficient and helpful.
Some of the deals available on the room rates make staying here a no-brainer - we've found fantastic prices with either breakfast included or room-only when we've stayed here.
Dunedin is not the easiest city for parking and I think this can be an issue - although we have always been able to park the car on-site without any drama and then don't move it again until we check-out!
You'll get a great nights' sleep here and be right on the doorstep of Dunedin's CBD for a good price.

This hotel was wonderful! The service was excellent, the room was really clean, as well as modern and spacious. They had guest laundry facilities that were affordable and provided laundry soap at minmal charge. They have free valet parking and took very good care of us. It was right downtown in a very convenient to walking location or just a few minutes drive away from sights we wanted to see. It also had a mini fridge that was practically empty that we used to save money on food and a full stocked mini bar located in the space above the fridge. I am not sure about kids activities or a swimming pool as we didn't have a need for either of these things.

Room Tip: Get a room looking down on the main street running in the front of the hotel.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review and I am delighted that you had such a wonderful stay.

You mention that you were not aware of any children's facilities as it was not relevant to you. As it happens, we do offer Rollaway beds that can be added to most rooms for a small charge and we also offer some interconnecting rooms. Cots are available free of charge and we can arrange a babysitting service given enough notice. Within walking distance of the hotel are a number of attractions that are suitable for all age groups of children including the likes of Cadbury World, Chipmunks Soft Play Area, Toitu Otago Settlers Museum and plenty of wildlife amongst other things.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your travels around New Zealand and look out for our other hotels in the Scenic Hotel Group as they all offer the same friendly, high quality service.

With kind regards

Adrian

I have stayed here many times for work, but this weekend I took my wife along as we were in town for a wedding. The car park is pretty confusing and costs $12 per day - on most occasions I had to get someone to let me in or out because the card had expired or the park was full or the overflow park cannot take a card.

Apart from that I thought that the hotel was pretty good, although the receptionist was very busy on Sunday morning holding the fort alone.

Dear Guest

Thank you very much for your review and thak you for continuing to support the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross.

I am sorry that you have had problems with our car parking. I will review our system of validating tickets to see whether this process can be improved upon in order to eliminate these issues. I know some guests do like to park their own cars but if you prefer, do take advantage of our Valet Parking, where you can drop off and pick up your car from the Front of the Hotel.

I look forward to seeing you again soon.

With best wishes

Good rooms, very adequately furnished, nice bathrooms. Off road parking. Helpful staff. Did not try the restaurant though. Close to Octagon, restaurants etc..

Beds very soft - almost too soft. Little street noise

Second time we've stayed at this hotel. Great value for money, staff are very friendly. The beds are the most comfortable we've come across. Breakfast is great. Hotel is easy to find, conveniently situated in the centre of Dunedin.

Finding the hotel was not a problem, although trying to get to the entrance via the one-way road system was a pain. There was a parking space outside the front of the hotel so you could drop off your bags and check-in.
The check-in staff were friendly as you would expect in New Zealand and we were quickly processed and shown the lift to our room. A pleasant surprise was the valet-parking although the system was not explained fully to us so the following morning we had to ask how to get to our car.

The lobby was clean as was the lift and corridor to our room.

The room was clean and tidy, although the TV as a little too low on the wall and caused me neck ache when watching it from the bed. The bed was comfortable although the pillows were hopeless.
The lack of air-conditioning was a major problem at night because it was too hot to sleep with the windows shut (late December), but too noisy from the kitchen fans and passing traffic, when open.

The bathroom was adequate and clean but by no means modern.

The main dining room was closed for a private function on our first night, so they sent us to the cafe/bar which was not bad but we ordered on dish and expected Steak (from a cow!) however ended up with something resembling either tuna or dog food! we were given a replacement meal and the staff apologised.

Breakfast was included in the room price and there was a choice of buffet or a'la carte. We had the buffet wich was good, although the cooked food was a little over done and the bread selection had dried out under the hot lamps.

Overall, not a bad place to stay, but don't confuse this hotel with the much more modern hotel, just up the road with almost the same name (Scenic Hotel Dunedin City) This place needs to be modernised

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. We greatly appreciate any feedback as it allows us to improve our product and service levels as a result of hearing first hand from our guests.
I am sorry the Valet Parking was not explained more clearly to you. We offer this service to our guests where they can leave their car at the front door and pick it up from the same spot when they wish to leave. It allows you to relax from the very moment you arrive at the hotel rather than worry about parking the car.
Thank you also for the feedback about the television in the room. Unfortunately I do not know which room you stayed in but I will ask my housekeeping and maintenance team to be on the look out for this and we will review the heights where necessary.
The Carlton Restaurant was closed for a short period over Christmas and New Year due to be so quiet over that period. However, our full A la Carte menu was offered in Ports O'Call Bar and Grill as well as the regular bar menu. I find it very disturbing to read your comments about the food. All I can think of is that the Spicy beef nachos were somehow ordered by mistake rather than the Steak Egg and Chips that we have on the bar menu. I must apologise for this error and I am glad our team was able to rectify the issue immediately.
Our sister hotel, Scenic Hotel Dunedin City, is a lovely hotel and I can understand why you love it so much. It does have a more contemporary feel there whereas the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross has the old Grand Hotel, which first opened in 1883, at it's heart. This older section houses, amongst other things, the Dunedin Casino along with our Cafe and Bar. Our bedrooms were refurbished in 2008 along with the Carlton Restaurant and these show the modern, quality feel that you would expect from the Scenic Hotel Group.
I hope to see you again, at either of our Dunedin hotels, in the near future.

With kind regards

Adrian
