“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2011

It was a public holiday and it showed in the restaurant the night we arrived. Two young girls did an admirable job coping with a tour group of 25. The food was nice as was the buffet breakfast the next morning. The room had an Ok view and was quite nice without be memorable.

Stayed here for three nights with our four year old. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were spotlessly clean and a fairly good size. The bathrooms were pretty small but very clean. Easy walk into the main city sights. I would stay again.

The room was on the street side, so we expected some noise but the isolation was so poor that it caused us bad sleep. Worse, however, was that we had a neighbour who was very noisy until 3 am, so we and our 3 kids got hardly any sleep. There does not seem to be any isolation between the walls, making it possible to hear every word the neighbour said. After multiple complaints about the neighbour, hotel staff offered to transfer us to another floor around midnight. I felt some tough words with the neighbour would have been more appropriate as staff said many people on the floor had complained. Otherwise the hotel is OK, only moderate friendliness at the desk though.

Staff snooty at check in, I was able to use my Debt Visa to pay for the room on line but it was not accepted at check in for "incidentals" so I had to front up with $100 cash. TV was hard to use without accidentally incurring a fee for buying a movie. Main light in the room did not work, rooms small, bathroom tiny, no hairdryer, the compendium stated all rooms have broad band access (no WIFI) there was a network cable in one of the drawers so I tried to get online to check out a restaurant didn't work which was fortunate because I later learnt the it cost about $12 an hour, just returned from Germany where Internet (WIFI) was free for the whole stay, the concierge wished us a good evening with all the sincerity of a flight attendant at the end of a flight with out raising his eyes from whatever he was reading at the time. Came checkout time the desk asked me if I had used anything from the mini bar I said no, he said we need to check the room before we give you deposit back I said don't you believe me but he didn't answer so we had to stand there till somebody went up to the 3rd floor to check the fridge, I might add we are in our 60s and are no strangers to Hotels and this is the first time somebody has gone to check the room before we checked out. welcoming hotel, not

For a business meeting at the university of otago I was reccomended to stay in the Southern Cross. Stayed for 2 nights and was very happy with the hotel. The room altough on the backside of the hotel was comfortable with a king bed, desk, flatscreen and reasonable size bathroom. Only minus was the very small wardrobe to put my clothes ( I like to hang my suit and shirts even if it is only for 1 night)
The hotel is reasonably close to the center of Dunedin with the main shoppingstreet passing alongside of the hotel. Internet in the room was through cable ony and somewhat expensive. In these 4 to 5 star hotels they should not charge you these kinds of amounts.
The breakfast with choice for continental only or full cooked was very good and I really enjoyed it. (especially because at the same time the All Blacks rugby team was taking their breakfast)
For getting back to the airport I took a taxi, which was told by the hotel reception to be a fixed rate of 65 NZD, however the taxidriver tried to charge me 75, so do take care. You can understand that did send him away with 65 only!

The service at check in was spot on, very friendly staff. The room was immaculate with very comfortable beds, if the pillows didn't suit your sleeping habit you could call for a different pillow. The location is about a 15 min walk to the octogon, a bit awkward at times. We asked for the room to be serviced by a certain time in the morning so we could come back to shower and change for the Graduation ceremony. When we got back the bed was made and the bathroom tidied. The staff took care of the car parking at the hotel. We liked that it was clean and comfortable and quiet. The only fault I could find was that the restaurant was noisy and cold and the steak was a bit tough.
Thank you Scenic Circle Southern Cross
