Description: Being NZ's most iconic dish, Fish Hook takes a new approach to revive the reputation of kiwi 'fush and chups' as we know it. Providing the highest quality fresh fish caught from our own boat in the local waters off the southern coast. We offer a wide range of species to choose from, Blue Cod, Sole, Monk and Gurnard just to name a few. Choose to have your fresh fish beer battered, crumbed or grilled (for those looking for a healthy option).Team this with your choice of shoestring, chunky McCain's fries or Kumera fries (sweet potato), a variety of sauces or pick from the range of fresh salads to create your ideal fish and chip meal.If you want to get a bit fancy or try something different there's also calamari rings, scallops, sweet chilli prawn skewers or salt n pepper squid to name a few of your options and if you need something to quench your thurst. Local ales such as the classic southern Speights or Emersons are available along with a fine pick of wines and non alcoholic beverages.Locally owned and operated. Take away or sit in and enjoy a warm friendly atmosphere in the heart of Dunedin city.

“Fabulous Fish Restaurant”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

Fish Hook served the best fish meal we have eaten in a long time. We had heard about the reputation of this place at the University end of town so decided to visit. My wife had crumbed teriyaki and I had grilled flounder fillets which were superb. The bowl of shoestring chips was huge. Having their own fishing boat means the fish is really fresh. This little places big reputation is certainly deserved.

“Superb fish and chip shop”
Reviewed 22 April 2014 via mobile

A step above the average fish and chip shop. A wide range of fish choices, dining in (licensed), and the option of having fish grilled rather than battered or crumbed.

We had tarakihi and chips. Good value, and the scoop of chips was generous.

“Customize your meal”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

Great choice for fish & chips, but there are some other options as well. You can completely customize your meal for both your taste and appetite. You get to choose the type of fish (some types are available battered, crumbed, or grilled), and order chips separately -- shoestring, fatties, or kumara (sweet potato) -- in 2 sizes. You do have to order sauces separately.

“Best Calamari Rings”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

Fish Hook has some of the best calamari rings that I've ever had. They are perfectly cooked, so as not to be too chewy, and coated in Panko, so that they're perfectly crispy. The fish of the day was also quite good - very fresh. We ordered kumera fries instead of regular, as we hadn't had those before. They were crispy and very well prepared. The price was quite reasonable by NZ standards. I'd definitely recommend this place.

“Great fresh fish perfectly cooked”
Reviewed 19 March 2014 via mobile

Had dinner in this small 'fish and chip' shop on recommendation. They have their own boat and catch a variety of different fish. We shared a portion of skewered prawns with sweet chilli sauce and they were delicious. We then both had grilled monkfish (that was perfectly cooked) together with salad and chips. Everything was delicious. Together with a glass of Otago Region Sauvignon Blanc the bill came to 21 NZ dollars per head. It was very good value for money for such perfectly prepared fresh fish.
