“Historical hotel in a central location”
Reviewed 3 March 2009

My husband and I stayed for 2 days and enjoyed it very much. Breakfasts were great. Our host made sure all our questions were answered. The building is interesting and beautiful. It has a garden and a terrace that has nice views of the cathedral next door. The Octagon, city center was only a 10 minute walk away with its shops and restaurants.

We arrived Christmas night and stayed three nights at Brothers' Hotel. We were warmly welcomed by Rod and the family including Baron the Lab and Molly the cat.

The rooms were cozy, the garden beautiful, and the breakfast was tasty. Rod was a font of information about the area and graciously dispensed advice for things to see and do around town as well as in the Fiordlands. Elm Wildlife Tours picked us up right at the hotel for our trip out to the Otago Peninsula to see penguins and fur seals.

We and our friends felt welcome to join the family in front of the TV. We even got a lesson in cricket rules accompanied by a glass of sauvignon blanc.

Just a lovely place to stay.

My husband and I stayed at the Brothers boutique hotel for four nights and by the end of our stay would definately say it was like 'Home from Home'.
Rod and his family were wonderful hosts who clearly enjoyed sharing their lovely hotel with all their guests.Nothing was too much trouble for them and their attention to detail and their anticipation of all guests needs were second to none.
I would highly recommend this as an ideal place to stay if your looking for something thats different from the rest.

We had a very enjoyable overnight stay at Brothers in Dunedin. The host, Rod, could not have been more sincerely friendly or obliging even carrying our two heavy suitcases from the top veranda to our room and back again the following day (my husband has a heart condition and could not do this). The room was small and finding somewhere to put things was challenging and required a little ingenuity. I would think that a longer stay would be a little stressful especially with two people in the room. It was nice to have a lovely lounge area with free internet access and the rose garden along the front of the building was gorgeous and a charming place to wander and admire. The best thing (for me) was the presence of a magnificent black dog, Baron, and a gorgeous black cat, Molly. It was great to enjoy some petting and spoiling with them as I was missing my pets at home. I would recommend this hotel to singles and couples who enjoy staying somewhere "different". It has a few drawbacks (small rooms, lack of storage) but these are far outweighed by the very pleasant hosts, lovely surroundings and sense of history, charming gardens and, of course, Baron and Molly.

  • Liked — great hosts, lovely garden & pets
  • Disliked — small room, lots of stairs, parking some distance & lots of stairs from accommodation

The Rough Guide couldn't recommend this place highly enough, and at first I was a little unsure about why they rated it. However, the attention given to us by the owner as far as local knowledge, free internet, free drinks (for everyone - not just a one off for us), and one of the most charming dogs I've met completely won me over. The rooms are a little basic, but the lounge is very nice and the atmosphere great.

Although I was only there for one night I can vouch for The Brothers as a great place to stay in Dunedin: very welcoming right from the initial phone call, centrally located within easy walking distance to the city centre; quiet, very clean and lovely ambiance. Breakfast was excellent too.

We stayed at The Brothers Hotel for 3 nights in March 2008, and can understand why the reviews have been somewhat mixed. Yes, the building has been modernised and so doesn’t ooze as much character as one might hope, but it is still better than a characterless hotel run by the big chains. We had one of their ‘superior’ (ie top floor) rooms, and there are indeed good views from the balcony. The bathroom was good, but the bedroom was small and the lack of anywhere to put clothes was a bit irritating. There were no drawers or shelves, just some hangers on the back of the door. However, it was comfortable and quiet, with no noise from adjoining rooms. The breakfast menu may have been the same every day, but it was fine and there was quite enough variety for a stay of a few days. There was a good communal lounge with a free internet access and a free PC – and complimentary wine if you wanted it.

The location has troubled some reviewers, and understandably so. It is indeed a very steep walk up from the City centre. However, it is not a long walk (5 minutes if you are reasonably fit), and its closeness to the centre is a real advantage. It is level from the car park into the hotel, though there is no lift to get from one floor to another.

So, it’s got pros and cons, but the real test is, would we stay there again? The answer is yes, because in our view the pros outweigh the cons, and at $170 a night, we felt it was good value. We do wish, though, that they would provide somewhere other than the back of the door to put your clothes.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to a special place in Dunedin. Relax in our European style family run Boutique Hotel close to inner city amenities with spectacular views of the City and harbour. Extensive renovations have been done to this former Christian Brothers 1920's stately residence transforming it into elegant heritage accommodation with 15 bedrooms and all with modern tiled en suites. The Brothers offers a mixture of convenience, history, charm, elegance and tranquillity, with the building retaining much of its original grandeur. Unfortunately the Hotel is unsuitable for infants, babies and young children under 16 and can't be accommodated. The Brothers is also quite different from anything else in Dunedin. The intention during the refurbishment was to be sympathetic to the building's history and wherever possible the original character has been retained. As a result most of our rooms are of a size often found in European Cities and maybe considered small by some. If room size is important to you or the prospect of walking 10 minutes uphill from the city centre is a daunting issue then other options maybe more suitable for you . A welcoming drink is offered early evening in the main Guest lounge. Book direct with us for better price and room options. ... more   less
