“A Classy Establishment”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

The restaurant we had booked for dinner had been evacuated due to a fire alarm and when I saw the firemen going in with wrecking bars we thought our meal would be somewhat delayed. We strolled around the corner and up the street and as we passed Bacchus, located discreetly up a stairway, and saw 'wine bar', in we went.

The attentive staff had one table available in the far corner and we just loved the atmosphere of the place, subdued lighting, fresh white table cloths, quiet conversations. The wine list suggested the class of the establishment and the arrival of our meals confirmed it. Beautifully presented and delicious. A great evening.

Bacchus is not cheap, but nor is it outrageous, although there are bottles of wine in the thousands if you can afford them. It is a special occasion restaurant and it made our evening in Dunedin just that.

“Nice food, but very slow evening”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

We've had wonderful meals at Bacchus in the past and were really looking forward to another great evening. However, the staffing levels were simply not sufficient to cope with the number of tables booked and we waited more than an hour for any food to arrive. When it did, we enjoyed it - the lamb was very tender and the chicken delicious, but it took so long to arrive that we had almost given up. Desserts were rather disappointing - some items had run out (again, a sign the kitchen was not coping with the volume) and the torte had been over-heated in the microwave and was very dry. The staff have changed and the waitress needs training in service. She was overly casual (great for McDonald's perhaps, but I'd assumed Bacchus would have slightly higher standards) and not up to the standard of staff from last year. Overall, a bit disappointing and not great value.

“Evening out for a nice dinner ,”
Reviewed 29 March 2014 via mobile

We wanted a special dinner out on our last night in Dunedin. This place was fine, service was slow. We ordered and it took a very long time for our meals. When served they were good, but not excellent as we had expected and hoped to have. The pork belly is very fatty, although tasty...but I don't like to eat fat! The sole was the fish of the day. Nicely presented and prepared, but a bit bland! Dessert, chocolate brownie with ice cream was great...but very slow in coming. The waits are too long between courses!

“We'll be back, Bacchus”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

Two nights ago we had an exceptional meal at Bacchus, on the Octagon in Dunedin. Arriving without a reservation we were really pushing our luck, but the maître d was superb. He gave us an overflow table, where we sat for about 20 minutes waiting for a fantastic window table in the main body of the restaurant. We had a glass of wine each, and shared a dozen Bluff oysters, fresh off the boat! Re-seated, we had delicious mains, mine was a chicken breast, my husband had brill, which he declared to be 'the best fish dish' he had had in years. I don't eat bacon, and the chef was good enough to remove the bacon from the dish for me, without any cheffish histrionics about customers spoiling the concept! The staff were energetic and witty - a real bonus. Thanks Bacchus.
