“African flair to Restored Victorian”
Reviewed 17 January 2013

Although we only stayed one night, Trish and Ray were wonderful hosts. The restoration of this home was done over the course of 20 years and it is wonderful to share such a labor of love. The home is a 3 story victorian which is decorated with many African artifacts which Trish and Ray brought back from their time traveling and working in Africa. We were the only visitors in early spring, but we got plenty of information for touring Invercargill and for the continuation of our trip. Upon our arrival, Trish offered us a platter of cheese and crackers with hot beverages and our breakfast was made to order. We had the use of a large and comfortable living room with a big screen TV and the use of a professional size billiards table which was quite challenging. Highly recommend the Safari Lodge with exceptional hosts.

Had a lovely one night stay on our way through Invercargil. This is a top-notch B&B- beautiful rooms and furnishings, comfy beds and good food. Trish and Ray were delightful and made us feel very much at home in theirs. If you prefer the stand-off hosts who make you feel as if you are interrupting their life by staying at their B&B, this is NOT the place for you. Can't recommend it enough!

My partner and I along with another couple stayed with Ray and Trish for a night then travelled to Stewart Island for two weeks then stayed another night with Ray and Trish when we returned before heading back home. We found the Safari Lodge an absolute delight to stay in with the Lodge environment and rooms being of exceptional standard and quite luxurious. Ray and Trish's southern hospitality is second to none, their help in getting us sorted for our Stewart Island trip was invaluable and I don't know how we would of managed without their guidance and willingness to do what ever it took to get us to Bluff with all our gear, and then pick us up again on our return. OUTSTANDING!!! and so very much appreciated.... You are both LEGENDS!!!! Thank you.... we will definately be back but for longer... next time.

Room Tip: We stayed in a differen't room on two differen't nights and found all rooms to be exquisitly...

The job Ray and Trish have done on restoring this place is simply superb. I visited at the end of the season, and was the only guest the night I stayed. Trish could not have been more helpful and accommodating, and the hot tub was a welcome relief after an exhausting day yomping around Ulva Island.

The rooms are nicely appointed, with very comfortable 4-posters. If I had one criticism (and it's purely a personal taste thing) it would be that I would have liked to see a bath in the en-suite, rather than a shower. The next morning, Trish cooked up a stormer of a breakfast, which set me up nicely for my drive on to Dunedin. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Lion Suite, which I can absolutely recommend!

we hadn't planned on visiting Invercargill but are very glad we had the opportunity. The bonus was our stay at Safari Lodge. Trish and Ray were wonderful hosts. Lovely, homely atmosphere really comfortable beds with on suite and a television lounge to die for.
Trish provided well cooked breakfast to order. Nothing was too much trouble.

Added luxuries like the spa pool with floating drinks tray, access to the computer (if your not a techie don't worry Ray will always guide you through) and the selection of books should you need a read or to look something up.

During our stay we had a guided tour of Invercargill + a great trip to Bluff and several other trips that gave us a holiday to remember.Invergcargill is well placed for trips to the Catlins and Stewart Island and not too far away from Te Anua, lovely lakeland scenery and where I caught a very "large " trout.

The Southlanders are very friendly people and quite a lot of history. Given the opportunity I would definately visit Invercargill again and certainly stay and Safari Lodge.

Title is misleading! Trish & Ray offer an experience in Invercargill that you'll not soon forget. Trish is a wonderful hostess, helping with plans, cooking up a wonderful breakfast and running a house that is a testamony to an African adventure we only could just imagine. Ray is as close as we came to finding that "perfect southern New Zealand man", fixing up old cars, motorcycles, fishing up at Lake Te Anau in his boat, and having been the reason for their years of living in Africa. Contrary to all the travel information, Invercargill has much to do, even if it isn't for the Rugby World Cup. There are the Catlins (much closer than Duedin), Bluff, trip over to Stewart Island (a once in a lifetime adventure), ogling at Burt Munro"s Idian, and letting life slow down a little. Tish & Ray were the ideal hosts. We'll be back for a longer stay soon. Stayed in the Rhino room, best bed in New Zealand.

This was our second stay at Safari Lodge, and we were again struck by the warm welcome and friendly service from proprietors Trish and Ray.
We love the Victorian ambience of the Lodge with its many artefacts gleaned from the owners' five-year stay in Africa - which netted some great stories, too. Our bedroom with its compact en-suite was spacious, warm and comfy; breakfast was timed to suit; and we were allowed the run of the house between times, including the pool room and ginormous TV - which particularly impressed our 10-year-old - and the spa pool, great for cold bones after a long day outdoors.
Safari Lodge is convenient to central Invercargill, where there's more to attract the tourist than we'd expected; fortunately Trish and Ray are very knowledgeable about things to do and places to go.
They even used their mini van to deliver a group of us to an event, easier than a taxi and it meant we could safely have a drink or two - not an advertised service (and only available if they're available) but just another example of how happy they are to see you enjoy your stay.
A guest-dedicated computer terminal with Broadband meant I could easily despatch some work commitments too - without inconveniencing by holidaying companions.
Safari Lodge is far more than just another B&B; it's almost an experience in itself. Highly recommended.
