We stayed at the Kelvin Hotel when we went to Invercargill for a wedding. The staff were wonderfully friendly, helpful and accommodating - we were able to check in early with no hassle or cost which was great. The reception for the wedding was at the Kelvin and the venue was great. Our hotel room was comfortable with a good amount of space. The view was nothing to rave about but we weren't there to spend time in our room looking out the window. The central city location was briliiant and really convenient, and as a bonus the rooms were nice and quiet which we hadn't expected. Free parking topped the whole experience off - another major bonus when in the heart of a city.

When I enquired about a room at the Kelvin, the first impression was a large fly resting on the front desk, one of those old suckers that won't even fly away when you bat it with your hand. Despite the fact that you can't control nature, it's not a good look.
I was trying to book within a very busy weekend in Invercargill for events, and they were very kind to ring back later that day to confirm that a room was available. The rate of $110 seemed like a reasonable deal.
The room, 402, turned out to be one of the smallest I've ever stayed in. It had a double bed, facing to a large LCD TV. The new pillows gave the bed a good look, but the sheets were so tightly tucked in that pulling them back brought up the bottom-sheet with them. The main light in the room is an annoying flourescent bulb which flickers when turned on, though thankfully a tungsten lamp is above the bed. Beside the bed are switches for the lights, but a third switch looks like a light-switch and is in fact the power to the clock/radio... Resetting it accidently is very easy to do.
The bathroom had newish vinyl put down, and it was quite clean. There was a shower over the bath, with a body soap dispenser. The shower dial seemed a little confusing to turn on... I think maybe the face-plate had been accidently turned the wrong way. Shower towels and facecloths were provided, but I couldn't find any hand-towels, despite a hand-towel rack.
The TV service included some Sky channels, but unfortunately (like most older hotels) it was analogue TV, so the widescreen LCD unnaturally stretched all the pictures out. However, I have only ever seen one hotel which had proper digital TV.
The view was good out the window, though it makes me realise how many ugly roofs there are in the Invercargill CBD! The noise from the street was not too much of a problem, as the windows seemed to block out most noise. They also blocked out the wind, which seemed to be blowing a gale that day.
Overall, the main reason you would stay at the Kelvin is the location. We were able to go out to the nightclubs and walk back to the motel (despite our electronic access pass not functioning properly). But, with places like 'Quest' and 'Living Space' providing more modern inner-city accommodation, I wonder if staying at the Kelvin is the best choice. The motel is very old, and there doesn't seem to be any interest to modernising it... At the end of the corridor was a flickering lightbulb, which wasn't fixed within the time we were staying there. The lights are an awful colour, the door to the smoker's verandah is held open by a piece of tatty wire, and the elevator is musty and dated. The front-desk staff are friendly and young, but maybe their systems need worked on (everything was pen-and-paper based, and on checkout they tried to charge me a higher rate than agreed upon earlier).
With a lot of upgrades, this hotel wouldn't be threatened by other hotels nearby.

In the center of Invergargill. Awesome places to eat all around, not to mention their in house facilities "Molly's". A good place to base yourself if you want to look around Southland. We will be back to stay. Highly recommended.

Stayed here for two nights on business in August. The hotel rooms are a bit of a lottery. I know some floors have been "rejuvenated" so you may want to confirm this on booking.

The refurbished rooms have nice flat screen tv's and decent bed/linen etc but the walls are still pretty thin and you get a lot of noise transfer. The shower in my latest stay was more of a drip than a shower.

The staff are considerate and service overall is good. The restaurant area is dated and you are much better off going next door to the "El Tigre" restaurant or to the Kiln for evening food. The rain espresso cafe also does a decent breakfast alternative.

  • Liked — Central Location
  • Disliked — Lack of a decent shower

I stayed one day in Invercargill after being in Wellington for 8 days at the Inter-Continental. The town of 50k was very nice and the hotel was very, very nice. It had a great restuarant and separate pub which are both well attendended by the local towns people. The hotel was very clean, had good internet and television and my room had a large flat screen tv and plenty of good channels. I would like to return with my family in the future.
