A really nice hostel we can highly recommend. Very clean, the kitchen is lovely and well equipped and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
We would come again, it's close to the town center and i site.

This place was warm, clean and had a nice location! Only stayed for one night but thought they had great facilities! Definitely would stay here again, mostly because it was WARM!

Cash only I believe. Wi-Fi was expensive, but McDonalds and the Library nearby had free Wi-Fi.

I stayed here on two separate occasions. The first time the hostel was fully booked so I got a double in the owner's house on the next street over, which was really nice and comfortable and included free internet. I came back here again and stayed in one of the dorm rooms. The only drawback was you have to pay $2 for a bedspread (I used my sleeping bag). Other than that, the facilities are well-kept and clean and the hostel itself is a really lovely house with a nice garden. It's located close to the Botanic Gardens.

We had a double room in the main building, which is an interesting old house in pleasant grounds on a very quiet street. The location is just north of downtown, a couple of easy blocks walk from the I-Site (where inter-city buses stop) at the worthwhile Southland Museum on the edge of the quite interesting (but a bit hodge-podgey) Queen's Park. Downtown Invercargill is a reasonably short (and level) walk away. We stayed in Invercargill going to and coming from Stewart Island, and had tight timings in the mornings. Having a McDonalds only a block or so away was a plus (we find it useful for good and inexpensive breakfasts - and, I'm tempted to say, not for much else). The hostel was willing to store our excess stuff for us at no charge.

Good, clean room, with adequate space, comfortable common room and good kitchen. Showers and toilets in the same rooms, so toilet delays in the morning and evening occur during the shower rush. Pleasant staff.

As noted by other reviews, cash only, unless you reserve well in advance through BBH (in which case you can pay through their booking system by credit card).

When we rolled into Invercargill for a three night stay we saw the lovely lush gardens surrounding the beautiful old house and we were pleased. Willy was very accommodating with allowing us to change our dates after the fact, as we had accidentally booked a day before we meant to. However I found him to be quite short with us and he seemed to be trying to do the least required to assist.

However I never got to see the hostel itself as we were told that we would be sleeping in a room in Willy's house.

The room itself was too small for a double bed so the bed was jammed against the wall. The mattress was foam and the bed squeaked a lot, not unexpected but a bit disappointing after other places we had stayed in the price range.

The facilities in the house were quite nice, although we only had access to two lounge chairs (with up to five guests in the house). The real problem was that with so many people sharing a single bathroom and laundry, we found ourselves queuing for all these facilities consistently. This was really frustrating when we were heading out to dinner and the other guests were coming back after a three day hike.

I would suggest that if you want to stay here, make sure you are staying in the main hostel. Better still, stay at Tuatara Lodge.

= Best situated [close to town center, restaurants, supermarkets, park, visitors centre - but on a quiet, traffic free, residential street] ;
=the Most relaxing, and Well Run by friendly and helpfull knowlegeable staff, that I have Ever been in.
In another review, someone stupidly complained about a lack of bedding. !?. I had none, and was supplied with Clean bedding [ i.e. freshly laundered, not just refolded up used stuff], for a small charge. Most places will supply bedding on request, if you do not have your own. Unlike some, Southern Comfort did Not have fleas or bedbugs !
The highest recommendation, whether like me you are in a dorm, or a private room. On a par with other locals charges, but way above in quality and value for money.

Room Tip: The manager initially put me into a dorm with 2 swiss men who had been tramping for 6 weeks. I don...
