We were driving the southern scenic highway and finished our trip in Christchurch the other day. We stayed at Southern Comfort for one night and had an ok stay. The hostel is not your usual backpackers, especially if you're used to the hustle and bustle of places in Queenstown for example or the more commercialised chain hostels in New Zealand e.g. Base Backpackers or the company that runs ACB, Discovery Lodge and Hot Rocks in Rotorua.
SC does feel quite homely, and certainly looks homely - it is a house after all! We stayed in the fireplace 4 bed dorm on the ground floor - lots and lots of space and decent wooden bunk beds. The bathrooms were beautifully decorated for a backpackers and were very very clean and tidy - same goes for the kitchen, it was very well equipped and clean. There is no tv but a radio playing constantly in the living room and one computer for free emailing but nothing else. The living room is rather like an old people home with its dated furniture and decor, but with a large supply of old magazines, its not something you cant handle for one or two evenings. The place is pretty cheap to stay, clean and you are able to organise trips to Stewart Island from there. Nice place, but if you want a little more action probably not your cup of tea. Infact if you want busy, why are you in Invercargill!!!
