“Iconic but forlorn”
Reviewed 31 March 2014

A good cardio workout gets you up to the viewing deck of this impressive structure that now has limited access. Still the view from it is amazing with a long panoramic views of eastern Southland and Bluff habour with Stewart Island in distance. Due to its age and historical importance, no development within the open spaces of the structure has never eventuated. There is no elevator although large access hatches in the floors could allow for one. Then again it is still a working structure. If you get the chance, on a clear day, take the climb, and bring a camera. A donation is usually a cover charge on the few days its open, given to a local charity on that day. Just a reminder, there are no facilities but Southland Museum is nearby.

“Great old building and wonderful views”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

Didn't know what it was at first when we drove past but the architecture gets your attention. A beautiful old building of Victorian architecture which would have been an important structure when first built. a great place for views of Invercargill.
