“Great place to soak up the atmosphere of this Southern city”
Reviewed 26 January 2010

On a recent trip to Invercargill I couldn't resist the opportunity to visit one of my favorite cafe's in central Invercargill - the Tuatara Bar & Cafe. Located within the spacious entrance hall of the Tuatara lodge yet owning its own street frontage with outdoor tables & chairs, the place realy knows how to do good coffee, offers other primo cafe comforts like the daily newspaper nestled amongst multiple couches, and it always seems relatively busy catering to locals and visitors alike. All of this adds to the Tuatara's style points and it certainly ranks up there with some of the more iconic NZ cafes.

I also had a good chat with Andrew (Lodge Manager) who put me up to date with local events and let me grab a whole bunch of brochures and maps of Southland, Catlins area and Fiordland. The Tuatara Lodge had a great collection of local information and would be a great place to plan a day trip full of activities or book tours for the near future.

The Backpackers Lodge is clean with great hot water and an interesting old elevator that does an exceptional job of getting you up to the large kitchen on the 3rd floor despite looking like it has been salvaged from a soviet submarine!

Ok, it isn't the fault of the hostel that Invercargill is dull.

This hostel is very large, and the kitchen could be a bit bigger to accomodate this. The internet computers are from the 80s, the TV room has a TV the size of a mouse, but overall it isn't too bad. Alright place to stay if you are passing through, hopefully onto somewhere better.

Noisy street outside can be annoying too. Very little parking given the size.

A gorgeous little cafe is attached to this massive hostel right in the middle of Invercargill. The staff are friendly, our room was clean and with towels provided, the shower (we stayed in a double ensuite for a night) was hot and powerful and the shared facilities were clean and spacious.

The only downside is that, although the hostel was quiet, the nearby church starts ringing its bells at 7am and then every 15 minutes afterwards so don't expect a sleep in! I'm not sure if this is also the case at the weekend, however...

Located right on Dee Street this hostel is in an old nightclub building and a good spot in town. There's off-street parking out the back but only room for about 6 or 7 cars. I was here in the middle of Winter so there were only about 10 people in the whole hostel, I can imagine in Summer it gets packed.

The rooms were spotless (I had a dorm to myself!) and comfy though if you're there at the weekend be aware that the local kids like to cruise up and down Dee Street in their very loud souped-up cars so it can be quite noisy. Theres also limited bathroom space (2nd floor only has one female toilet & shower) so again in Summer it could get busy. The kitchen is big and theres a lovely cosy tv room off of it on the 2nd floor.

Reception is huge and they have acres of information on everything to do in the area. Towels can be hired for $1. Theres also a wine bar / restaurant in the reception area (but be advised it closes at 16:30 in winter).

A good place to stopover though I'm not sure there's much to keep you in Invercargill for more than a day or two.
