“History, scenery and wildlife”

The weather was not kind the day we were there but you expect lighthouses to be exposed to the weather. There is a shelter at the carpark with good toilets. The shelter also has the fascinating history of this area -the tragic loss of life from wrecks before the lighthouse was built. It also has information about the wildlife. There is an excellent board walk to the lighthouse so it is very accessible and it only a short distance. There was a trio of seals the day we were there. I asked the 6 year old what they were doing and she said - playfighting. Quite a good descroption.

“Accessible History”

Only a short drive off the main road, and an easy walk to view, this wooden light house stands out as a NZ historical emblem of a growing country and how they solved the issues of the day.
On the beach and in fact on the steps leading up to the light house, fur seals in their natural state, the pristine coast and endless sea.

“Dramatic setting for photography”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

From Fortrose it’s 16km along the coastal route to get to Waipapu Point, the final 4km of these being on an unsealed road but if you’re visiting The Catlins this is a worthwhile detour which can also take in Slope Point the most southerly point on the South Island a short drive away, plus Curio Bay with it‘s fossilized trees.

There is plenty of parking at Waipapu and a modern building which has information displayed about the area and also houses the toilets. The toilets are clean and have running (cold) water but I don’t think the latter would be suitable for drinking. My wife was laughing when she emerged from the “ladies” commenting about the wind she had experienced in the cubicle - I think she was referring to the gale force which was hitting the coastline and whistling through the building.

We were almost being blown off our feet - “bracing” may be one way to describe the conditions. Even the sea lions were sheltering behind the rocks which was a bit of a surprise for us when we ventured onto the beach to get another angle to photograph the lighthouse. The lighthouse isn’t open to the public. We looked around a bit and retreated to the car just in time before it started to rain.

I suppose it’s just your luck what you may experience here. The same day, further along the coast it was quite calm and the next morning quite pleasant weather wise. If you go prepared for 4 seasons in a day you’ll probably be fine and seeing it as we did makes you appreciate why it is located here - there has been at least one notable shipwreck when 131 were killed in 1881.

Not a lot here apart from the scenery and the lighthouse which is nice and worth a trip on a sunny day but can be a bit windy
