This place is primarily a backpackers' hostel -- at least in its style and setup. A friend and I got a 'double cabin', but that's something smaller than any hotel room I've ever had (two twin beds) and you went outdoors 30 yards to the bathroom. I'm guessing about 8ft x 10ft room? There aren't a lot of choices in Milford (no other option, I don't think), so we were glad to have it. Take a look at the chalets maybe? You paid for wifi, but at least they had a half-decent connection. Breakfast (not included) was pretty decent, though surprisingly expensive.

Room Tip: "Cabins" are tiny tiny and have no private bath. Consider the chalets, which apparently a...

Would recommend a night in the chalets! What a view! Checking in was very simple. When we drove around to the doorstep of the chalet I will never forget the amazing sound of the water gushing by. Then upon entering our chalet we heard absolute stillness with a view that was beautiful - I could spend hours watching the water move over the rapids. The Chalet was very clean and spacious. Nice simple kitchen and bathroom was good.

Hi, great to hear you enjoyed your chalet stay. The Cleddau River runs right past the front of the chalets and it usually makes people's jaws drop when they see it. Lots of wows! Thank you for taking the time to tell others by posting here.

The bad part of the stay was actually the time before we had been able to check in.
We arrived around 2PM with the check in time being 3PM. We asked if we could check in early but the lady at the front desk said she is new so she did not know. I asked if she could check with someone and she said she was the only one there but she could check if the room was ready. She returned after five minutes saying that she is sorry, she is new, and the room was not ready yet. We should come back at 3PM. Since I travel a lot I know the stories about the "room not being ready" so we decided to go to the little river which was right where our cabin was (she told us which one we would get). Of course, the room was ready (there are large windows you can see through) and so we waited until 3PM with nobody coming to clean the clean room. We walked back to the front desk and asked again if we could check in now so the lady said, you guessed it, she was new and did not know. I asked her again to check if the room was ready and here is the surprise, it was ready now because it cleaned itself while we waited in front of it. She said again that she was new and wanted to charge us for the room (which was already paid for) and then asked if she could make a reservation for us for a tour or anything. We asked her to make a reservation for us for a ferry ride which she tried, but since she was new, she was not successful in doing that right so we had to fix that in person later that day.

The room itself was nice in terms of the layout but it was not clean. I do understand that there are many sand flies and regular flies but they should not pile up like they did all over the place if you have a cleaning crew. We did not even take a shower as the bathtub was full of flies.

The location is breathtaking but so is everything that you see there.

Since there are not many options to stay in Milford Sound we would suggest trying something else or driving in and out the same day.

Hi and thank you for your review. We appreciate your point of view in terms of checking in on time and completely agree, however we would never let a guest check into a room that has not been properly checked by a trained senior staff member. During winter when you arrived, we have far fewer guests than in our summer season and we run a small team, one of which had obviously just begun her training with us and we apologise that they weren't able to deliver the level of service we would prefer. Thanks for posting again.

We cannot recommend the Milford Lodge Chalets highly enough. Upon arrival we were greeted by the very friendly, welcoming staff who directed us to our accommodation for the night. As soon as we stepped through the door of our chalet the sheer beauty and magnificence of the area was overwhelming. The view through the massive window was simply heavenly, from the beautiful flowing river to the high craggy mountains with waterfalls cascading, it was a sight to behold - in fact we did not want to close our curtains and didn't until the light had completely faded! The chalet was a wonderful, relaxing place to stay, impeccably clean, very comfortable and very nicely presented. The worst part of the stay was having to leave!!

Room Tip: The chalets have amazing views! We highly recommend them!

Hi, wow what a great review. Our chalets are really special and the great news is we have 8 more available in a few weeks time! We are very excited as we are so proud of them. They really deliver the 'wilderness' experience people imagine and hope for. Thanks for the review again.

We booked a powered camper van site for 2 nights in early November. We knew that it was going to be a big drive down to Milford Sound and therefore thought it would make sense to spend a couple of nights down there to make the travel worth while.

We booked the site in July, called 3 days before to confirm the booking and also called on the morning of our trip to ensure that we definitely had a powered site. Despite all of this contact however at no point were we informed that the powered camper van sites were actually unavailable on the day we were due to arrive as a result of "unexpected" building work taking place. Now to be fair the work (which I think is building additional luxury lodges which will no doubt be very popular!) was originally booked for July but, due to poor weather and road closures, had been delayed and the builders simply turned up and started working in November. This left the manager and staff in a very difficult position as they were not allowed to cancel existing bookings, however they were then faced with tired, unhappy travellers who had no other option but to either stay in one of the backpacker rooms (if available) or stay in the car park. The nature of milford sound is that it is VERY remote and therefore this is really the only place there is to stay.

Although the backpackers facilities are very good, it would have been preferable to let people know in advance of making the big drive down, so that they could make an informed decision as to where they would like to stay.

Despite all of this the location is very convenient and if you are doing a Rosco kayak trip it is a perfect place to stay. The staff are definitely working very hard to minimise the impacts to guests once they arrive and we could not fault their kind words and very high levels of customer service. If you are looking for a backpackers residence this would be a brilliant choice with a good kitchen and shower facilities. The preference would of course be to book a lodge, however there are only 4 available and as per other reviews these tend to get booked up fairly quickly. Hopefully the current building work is a short term pain which will result in additional lodges for people to book.

Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend it for camper vans as the sites currently available are basically just a car pack, with the wake up call of a jack hammer and builders immediately outside your window, which is not quite the "milford experience" we were promised. Hopefully this will improve soon and the ambience will be restored, however for now I would suggest checking prior to booking.

Room Tip: If you can afford it and if it is available, book a lodge! Don't use the camper van sites whils...

Hi there and thanks for posting a review. The process of improving a business is sometimes a little painful and disruptive, we totally understand. The process is being managed a little better now we are a little way into it. At the time of writing this 4 new chalets have arrived and are being installed and the disruption should last only a week or two longer. We are emailing guests to let them know and adding a few extra 'goodies' throughout their stay and managing it as best we can. Thanks for posting, thanks for your understanding and fair review and hopefully you can visit us again one day to enjoy one of the new rooms in Milford Sound.

The lodge offers a beautiful place to stay and a friendly staff. The rooms were a bit small considering what you pay, but at the end of the day, it's about supply and demand. The rooms while small did offer a heater, jug of water and glasses, and bug repellent. One of the perks here is that there is an awesome shared cooking area with utensils and refrigerator. This helps to keep eating and drinking cost to a minimum. I would recommend a stay with Milford Sound Lodge and if you are a diver or would simply like to try it I would highly recommend doing it with Descend Scubadiving.
