“Beautiful peaceful location”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

We visited the Hilton in April 2014 and stayed in a lake view deluxe room. The amazing views are worth the higher price. I would not book a hill facing room. The relaxation rooms with private hot tubs are on the ground floor beside the walkway but hidden behind some garden, so unsure how private they are. Our room was spacious, clean and worked well for two adults and a child. It had a gas fire in the room which was cosy on a cold night. The room temperature was adjustable. The separate living area was great, although one has to be careful to remember the split level between the bed and the living area. The sofa was standard size and too low to be comfortable for long periods. There are two stools on the outside balcony. The bathroom has separate bath and shower. The shower door opens in revers which means you do get water on the floor if not careful. There is a smell coming out of the drain overflow grate, but fixable by turning on the tap and putting some shower gel into the sink. The toiletries are standard and always replaced, however, no bath salts are provided. The spa has some lovely product on sale, perhaps a sign could be placed in the room offering these in small sizes for a touch of luxury. The bed was comfortable and we had a great night's sleep each night as it was so quiet.

The peace and beauty of the location is its greatest strength. The location of the hotel is outside the city but near the airport. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the city but has to be booked. There is a water taxi from 12pm till the evening , and this was surprisingly comfortable on a cold night ($10 per adult $5 child). It is 25 mins walk to Frankton Hub where there are a large number of buses going to the city, Arrowtown, Lakes Hayes etc. It took us 2 hours to walk the Queenstown Trail into the city. Taxi by Corporate Cab is $50 into the city. The 10 mins walk along the walkway to the Kawarau Dam is worth doing for those picture postcard photos and a view of the clear river from above.

The breakfast was included in our tariff. The hot buffet was great if you arrived when the food was newly cooked, however, one morning we arrived to find the poached eggs had turned hard boil in the serving tray. Otherwise we enjoyed the hot selection. The fruit and continental selection was nice, especially the fruit salad. The muffin looked nice but was dry. The Asian selection of noodles and fried dumplings was tasteless and below the acceptable standard. Perhaps if the chef is not able to cook Asian food, it could be contracted to someone who can. I think it is a great gesture to offer something that would appeal to Asian guests but it is a shame if it is not good. The service at Wakatipu Grill for breakfast was cheerful and prompt.

We used the pool and the jacuzzi, which were lovely. The area was kept clean and there were lots of towels. The facilities were not over crowded and we enjoyed the heated pool and jacuzzi very much. One suggestion is for some goggles (adult and kid size) to be sold at the spa, I am sure someone else would have forgotten their goggles too! We noticed some peeling wall paper in the corridor, and hope it will be fixed soon.

We enjoyed our stay at the Hitlon and are glad we chose to stay there. We left feeling refreshed and energised. We will be back!

We really enjoyed our 7 night stay at this hotel, and the staff made us feel very welcome and were always available to assist. Even though the hotel is located away from the main buzz of Queenstown, it was easy enough to get to and from town by utilising the water taxi and free hotel shuttle. The Lake view room with a gas fire was very comfortable.

Why only 3 stars? Here are the reasons: There are 3 restaurants in the hotel vicinity. One of the restaurants offers typical pub type food, which is not for us. We were not informed that the Thai restaurant had actually closed for the Autumn (only found this out when we walked over to the restaurant). We were also not informed that the Wakatipu Grill closes on a Wed and Thurs night in the off season - also only discovered this when we ventured down to the restaurant for dinner on the Wed prior to leaving. At least we now knew we had to make a plan for Thurs dinner.
The breakfast is not great. I prefer eggs cooked to order rather than cooked in mass.I also enjoy a good bircher muesli, unfortunately it was laced with orange (I do not eat oranges in bircher muesli).

The final disappointment was checking out. I was asked if it is OK to charge my credit card in AUD. This sounded reasonable, so I agreed. Only afterwards, when reading the receipt, I discovered that I had consented to them charging a 2.05% currency conversion commission. Why would I ever agree to such a charge? I was not told this upfront, so had not consented to this!!!! On top of this, my local bank in Aus still charged yet another currency conversion commission.

Room Tip: A lake view room is a must!

It is a nice hotel on the waterfront. However this hotel is outside of Queenstown- on the opposite side of the town and you need to drive approx 10mins to the town centre where the shops, cafés,bars and main waterfront area is. There is no way you will manage with the water taxi- especially outwith the summer months.

Had we known this prior to booking we would of stayed somewhere more central.

Dear sc207,

thank you for your review.

One of many reason why guest choose to stay in the Kawarau Village is the seclusion as it adds to the tranquillity of the hotel.

I hope you have another chance to visit Queenstown and why not make the most of the calm environment and try one of our Relaxation rooms with stunning lake view from your private hot tub.

Kind regards

Mario

Great service, great venue and it kept getting better. I initially stayed on business and extended my trip to include my wife. We were both pleasantly 'surprised' just how accomodating and friendly the staff at Queenstown were - a truly great hotel and friendly experience.

Had a wonderful stay at the Hilton with family in April 2014. Location is a little out of the way but it is no problem if you have a car.

The waterfront setting is fantastic and everyday you wake up to a breathtaking view of the lake and tranquil water. My sons fed the ducks every morning and we had lovely strolls along the shore.

The property is very new and well maintained although a bit short of staff. After a while we were used to it since this is New Zealand after all where things are a bit more laid back.

Would love to come back to Queenstown again. Beautiful town, beautiful lakes, beautiful sceneries and warm people.

The hotel is elevated and views are magnificent from the outside. Room is very pretty, too bad the fireplace in my room didn't work. Have to drive a short distance to town. Good and affordable hotel =)

I absolutely loved this hotel. From the contemporary designed rooms with a fireplace, to the breathtaking views over the lake and mountains. The hotel offers several restaurants to choose from and a spa offering an extensive choice of treatments. An indoor pool is also available for those wishing to stay in. The staff was friendly, as well as informative and helpful. The hotel is not centrally located, however, water taxis and shuttle buses are available to take you to Queenstown- just book in advance, or better yet rent a car to explore the beautiful surrounding area.
