“Lovely setting but a little isolated”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

There is no signage on the main road advising where the property is. Although you can see it when approaching the river and bridge, the old access is closed off and you have to drive up the hill and turn right, then drive along until you find the entrance.
We stayed in a Deluxe King Lake View, which was just that. The decor is contemporary and bed very comfortable. There were no wine glasses in the kitchenette, and only 2 pillows on the bed. I rang and requested 2 extra pillows, waited an hour, then received a call from "magic" (reception) who said she had been told there were spare pillows in the wardrobe. We are accommodation providers ourselves, so had checked in here obviously. Another hour later we still had not received the pillows, so went out for dinner. The pillows were there when we got back. When we checked out the next morning, I advised that there was a light bulb out in the main room and that there were no wine glasses in the room, and was told I could have requested them! Our own accommodation has multiple wine glasses, 4 pillows on each bed with spares in the wardrobe in every room!
Apart from the poorly cleaned ceramic cooktop, the room was fine, and the included breakfast was amazing - everything you could want. Staff were pleasant.
Good undercover parking, although nearly missed out when we returned from dinner in town - luckily some visitors were just leaving.
Some lovely walks along beside the lake and river.
I would recommend that the management put wine glasses and at least 1 spare pillow per person in every room. This is a basic requirement in commercial accommodation in NZ.

Room Tip: We stayed in the "hotel" as opposed to the "Resort & Spa", so not sure what...

We were told when we booked that the 2 rooms could accommodate 6 people however when we arrived we were told only 4 persons had suitable bedding and that we would have to pay extra for uncomfortable stretchers.

The Kawarau Hotel is situated just outside Queenstown, but we found that to be a positive rather than a negative. The hotel is very quiet, with a lovely outlook over the Kawarau River. The room itself was modern and comfortable, if a little on the small side. The bed was, hands down, the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. The concierge staff were extremely helpful, printing out tickets for a tour for us. Highly recommended.

My husband and I spent 2 nights here on our honeymoon. We had a Lakeview room and it as quite lovely. Really comfortable room (though a bit chilly despite trying to raise the temperature with the controls), nice and clean, with a little sitting area and kitchenette separate from the bedroom (stovetop, mini fridge, microwave). Very friendly and helpful staff. There is a qbook in the lobby to book activities. We ate at the Chinese restaurant (me & mee) ands it was really delicious. Had drinks at the bar at the Hilton, also very nice. Didn't try the breakfast (we went to town)

No free WiFi in the rooms but it is available in the lobby. Free parking in their garage. You do need a car to get around - it's a good 10 minutes away from town. They have the schedule for the water taxi ($10pp) and a bus (though you have to transfer), and they also have a free shuttle that you call and reserve spots on. This would be great But when we tried to use it to go into town, they were full and we couldn't go for another 2 hours because it doesn't run very often. A bit annoying! We ended up driving to town and just paying for parking both days.

If you're not skiing and really just want to enjoy Queenstown, I might consider a more central hotel. Otherwise, this is a real nice option a little outside of town but close to skiing and also arrowtown. Really close to the airport too.

The only other advice I'd give - if you're flying out of Queenstown airport in winter (particular July) there is a decent chance of your flight being cancelled or delayed half a day because the icy runway prevents planes from landing. Plan a buffer day if you're connecting to travel elsewhere - we almost got stuck an extra day and almost missed our connection out of the country!

The room was lovely - modern and clean. We stayed for our honeymoon and they bought us some lovely macaroons as a congratulations which was nice. The bath shower was quite narrow, and I found it uncomfortable to shower in. Also a trek to get to breakfast. Check in staff didn't advise us of what was included, and we had to ring to ask if breakfast was included. As we paid extra for the package it would have been nice to be told this at check in. Location is a bit out of queenstown, nice if you're wanting to be away from the hustle and bustle. No shower cap provided in the room which was annoying.

we had a great Time at Kawarau hotel. the rooms are very modern and right up there! maybe a bit small, particular when traveling with ski gear like us. we also enjoyed the restaurant options around. Catching the water taxi to town was a great experience itself.

My partner and I went here for our anniversary and it was amazing. We had a lake view, which I would definitely recommend!!. The staff were always friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcomed. We definitely didn't want to leave and will be back again next time we are in Queenstown. :)
