“Fantastic Experience”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

We couldn't have been happier with our stay at this lovely lodge. Our hosts, John and Amanda, were fascinating conversationalists and introduced us to many delicious local wines. We chose to have dinner at the lodge and discovered that everything we had heard about Amanda's gourmet cooking was true. Our room was elegant and included two comfortable reading chairs and a well-designed bathroom. The property on which the lodge is located is beautiful and only minutes from Queenstown. This lodge is a definite choice for a luxury stay in New Zealand.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. The accommodation was extremely comfortable and spacious with a nice view over the fields at the back of the property. We stayed in the Merino room. A great breakfast overlooking the garden. We particularly enjoyed the canapés and wine tasting each night. One night it was very clear with no clouds and John took us outside to point out the different stars, planets and constellations using a special narrow beam touch. The pet sheep and 2 frisky rams was an added interest. We stayed here in late April so it was good to enjoy the log fire in the evening. Highly recommended.

In January my wife and I had a long planned trip to New Zealand staying exclusively in B&B's and lodges selected by a professional agency out of Seattle. We stayed in some amazing places throughout the country - and our favorite was the Queenstown Country Lodge. This was a beautiful property located midway between Queenstown and the charming, and much less hectic, town of Arrowtown. Our hosts, John and Amanda, were a key ingredient to what made our stay so special. We felt like we were among old friends and I spent my first night watching a cricket match on television with John and Steve (another guest from GB who I just assumed was John's best friend - but come to find out he was just another guest staying for the second night) and tasting some great NZ wines. It was one of the most memorable evenings of my month in NZ! Amanda suggested a walk around one of the nearby lakes which was lovely with few tourists - and not in any guidebooks! We loved the pet sheep and views in the morning from our bedroom of hot air balloons floating over the mountains. Also - perhaps not publicized - Amanda is an amazing cook and dinner can be arranged!! We are anxious to return to NZ - if for no other reason to return to this very special place!!

Midway between the tourist bustle of Queenstown and the quaint village of Arrowtown is Queenstown Country Lodge, perhaps as fine an example of Kiwi hospitality as you will find in New Zealand.

Amanda and John are perfect hosts. She prepares spectacular dinners and to-order breakfasts. He presents exquisite wine tastings each evening and is happy to elaborate on what to see and do amid the extraordinary beauty of the area as well as explain the finer points of sailing, cricket and rugby. One highlight was a post-dinner astronomy lesson with John under the starry southern sky.

But to appreciate what great ambassadors for New Zealand these two are, consider this story: I left my iPad on the plane after the flight from Christchurch to Queenstown. After telling my story to an Air New Zealand desk officer within 20 minutes of landing, he assured me that they had searched the plane and not found my iPad. I was resigned that it was gone.

When we related this tale to John and Amanda, they made it a personal crusade to find my iPad. John twice visited the Queenstown airport and made repeated calls to Air New Zealand. Finally, he located it in the Air New Zealand lost and found at the Christchurch Airport. The airline then sent it on to our hotel in Auckland by courier, where it was waiting when we arrived.

Without John, I'm sure it still would be sitting in the Christchurch airport. For that alone, they deserve five stars, but even if that hadn't happened, we would have awarded it.

The B&B is in the beautiful countryside, but an easy drive into Queenstown and Arrowtown.

Room Tip: We had a second floor corner room, with expansive views in two directions. Although three rooms were...

Queenstown Country Lodge was the highlight of our 3 week trip to NZ. John and Amanda are lovely hosts, the accommodations are first class, and the breakfasts and dinners are works of art. Other highlights included eating tomatoes right off the vine in the garden, feeding the sheep over the back fence, John's explanations of the fine points of rugby and cricket, and the evening wine tastings. Bravo, John and Amanda!

This is quite simply a wonderful lodge in which to stay. Our welcome was great, our room quiet and very beautifully decorated with views across the surrounding countryside. Nothing was omitted for our comfort and enjoyment. Breakfasts were scrummy - we were offered whatever we wanted - and the six o'clock drinks were always fun. John gave us a tour of the wonderful night sky with his laser torch and made extensive efforts to name a wild flower - verbascum - which was driving me mad. We think ourselves extremely fortunate to have been introduced to this absolutely splendid country lodge. We loved the fun. The Dowse from Sussex.

Room Tip: They are all really delightful.

This is lovely lodge with owners who provide extraordinary hospitality. There are three large suites with beautiful views of grass-covered hills where sheep and deer graze. Each suite has sitting area, very nice bathroom and comfy bed. The breakfasts prepared by Amanda are superb. John's wine tasting was fun and informative. We really enjoyed ourselves.
